Gardening - Taming the wild lawn and other New improvements!

Good day everyone! Zak here from Cape Town, South Africa!

I have been struggling to get time to blog, with these photos taken more than a week ago. Well... this is the story of the wild lawn, the veggie garden's unfinished business and whatever I have managed to do with my greens!

Not that the work in the garden is ever over? I think that if I had one or two weeks off from work, fair weather and dedicated time in the garden, then MAYBE I would get all the jobs done.

Without further ado, let's look through how it WAS and bring us forward in time a bit so I can post about the latest stuff!

The wild grass. The kids would joke that they can hunt for pokemon in here because it is so long. You know? Tall grass?

In the veggie patch at the back I also had my wooden pallet raised bed that needed to be completed!

As was suggested by @new.things, I did end up levelling the sides of the box out and they were planted in a little, squared up and screwed together. There are some small gaps which I will fill as naturally as I can!

BTW, my friend @loadreaper helped me with all of this! (And then came in later to cut the lawn with his machine too.)

And here is Barry (@loadreaper) giving a hand with the building of the box and filling it with dirt.

And there he is mowing the lawn!

To fill up some space, the bottom of the box is filled with branches, sticks and twigs. This will decompose under the soil.

I have been gathering the rough material in a pile for a while now while the cuttings of the softer stuff goes into the compost with all the kitchen scraps.

Here is Barry doing his think again.

Veggie/Herb Garden

@clairemobey bought us some more Sweet Basil plants for the garden!

Meanwhile I have Mint Basil, Garlic and some onions going!

Here some of the Sweet Basil got planted out as well as Garlic that I grew straight out of the bulbs!

On the left hand side there is Onion. I know it is a double and ideally I should be pulling that out, splitting it and replanting it. I am however just getting started with this crop and I want to see what it does. I am experimenting!

More onion cuttings are coming though!

So this first section of the garden has been planted in. More sections will be rehabilitated and things will grow in them soon!

Thank you for reading this post and having a look at my little garden. I hope to have some time on the weekends to tend it. I only have time late at night (after 10pm) or very early (around 4am) to spend a few minutes in the garden because we are currently working in the docks.

It is a stressfull project and takes up a lot of my focus and energy. But I will do my best to keep up with the plans I have for the garden!

Have a great weekend!

Cheers!

It's looking good ! It feels weird to think that where you are is springtime, while we're just at the start of winter.

Haha. Indeed.

If you had the money would you travel to where it is summer all the time or the other way around?

Good question ! I like all the seasons, the only thing I really don't like is protracted periods of damp, grey, gloomy weather. So if I had all the money I wanted, I'd probably split my time in terms of weather and go to where the archaeology is best 😁

Noice.

Here we have extremes of winter and summer sometimes, though Cape Town is rather mild compared to some of the inland locations.

I would just really want to avoid THOSE.

When you see plants in the garden growing, it feels great. Good to see you got things done in the garden. Thank you for sharing the updates.
