@zakludick's Hive Classroom of 2022 plus extended Community! - advice and tips

avatar
(Edited)

20210322_095642.jpg

I have a "classroom" of Hive Students that I guide, assist and watch grow. That in itself has been quite satisfying to watch. I am, however, also a student. I am not a Dolphin or a Whale but I have more than doubled my HP since the beginning of the year and I will likely double again before the end of 2022.

I am probably doing something right.

However, success for myself is not enough. Hive is a community. Leo Finance is a community. Ecency is a community. The whole blockchain is made up of communities and hell, this little group of people I have onboarded is a little community as well.

Community is key!

Thus I have plans in my head to build out and reach out to others. One of the things that is apparent to me is that a lot of active members seek to onboard people to Hive.

They struggle to do that onboarding for two reasons. I know because this is what I do!

blue_bar.jpg

Struggle number one: Scepticism or lack of motivation

Why should someone join Hive?

It is decentralized social media you can blog and post about just about any interest and there are rewards generated on the posts that you do. Even your votes on other people's posts can earn you a reward!

People doubt the rewards are real.

You should, at some point, do the exercise with yourself as well as each person you teach, exactly how you can take their effort and put the money into their hands. If not in their hands then in your own. I can show a transfer from my local crypto exchange into my bank account. There is the proof of income.

The platform is decentralized(BUT - TMI) so you can post and blog about anything you want, there is no censorship... and then you, the onboarder, remember that there are still some rules so you get to say "BUT" and then give them the rundown of stuff you may not do.

I find that this is too much information. Instead explain the positive - no cencorship of thoughts or opinions and then just end off with saying that there are community rules and guidelines to make things fair. A follow-up discussion can run through the vital bits of what can and cannot be done.

Everyone understands community rules and like the idea that there are standards that everyone knows instead of getting the feeling that they will get judged for making a mistake.

The lack of adoption is another barrier. Hive has a handful of millions of users scattered across the whole world. This is insignificant to the millions in each country and billions worldwide that are signed up to the largest social medias in the world.

Sadly, this one fights against itself, there cannot be adoption without more people joining. So the other two points must do all the convincing work.

There is however a concept of critical mass - when the amount of people you have signed up begins to invite people itself. Like a wave... people then get to join your Community.

I have 12 Hive students, I get to say: You can join my Community.
This gives people the feeling that there are ALREADY people there that will read their stuff and support them and this is absolutely true.

I can also proudly say that I have students that are already successful! This gives other people a track record of something to see start recently and become successful.

And thus I would like to repeat: Community is key!

blue_bar.jpg

Struggle number two: Members leaving or becoming inactive

The exact opposite onboarding is where we are losing Hive members. There are usually two or three reasons for people becoming inactive:

A Lack of Interaction is one, this can be promoted by making sure people in our community are being interacted with, simple as that.

A lack of rewards is another. This is a strange one. Web 2.0 platforms do not reward you for your time, your attention or your investment. It is senseless to compare the two. Even if you earned $0.001 from a post or a comment, then you are moving forwards and you are growing. Some people get discouraged because they see the potential of the big guys on the blockchain or at community accounts and compare that to themselves.

Your first post or introduction is usually pretty good and gives you a nice boost. Generally, if you use the right tags, you get a nice boost to start as the community loves welcoming new people to join. However, after that it is natural to see a slump in income and votes on your posts. You will need to post and engage and make yourself known in the community. If you do not, you will not earn.

Once again, we turn towards the concept of community. If there is a community of people who constatly interact and support one another, the chances of rewards are much higher.

The final reason to have inactive accounts or people leaving any online platform is: Toxic Behaviour.

This is actually a lot less common on Hive than in other places of the internet. People can really lay into each other on Facebook and Twitter sometimes. There are people who get really self-righteous and petty for the smallest things.

Example: Someone makes a post on popular social media of a recipie, they go out of their way to make it look good, they buy better than usual ingredients and photograph each step.

They then get slandered by someone because it contains meat or even the fact that this person HAS food and that they should feel terrible for that fact. This is crazy because two people are now talking to each other over internet on electronic devices... that was already a privelege far beyond the mere fact that someone has food.

In contrast there is the behaviour of Hive: There are Foodies, a community of people who post food. There are also Vegans/Vegetarians. I have never seen a vegan attack someone for posting their food on Hive. There are NPOs and charities. I have never seen somone attack someone for posting that they have food.

On the blockchain, your attacks are public and leave you open to tangible rebuttal. You downvote someone and leave a crappy remark, they can do the same to you. You don't go to "Facebook-jail" and ask the moderators to intercede. You can intercede on your own. One downvote generally means nothing. If you didn't break a Community rule, then there will not be much more than one or two downvotes.

Community leaders can step in and whole communities can support unfair bullying. One or two downvotes are insignificant compared to the support of a Community. Break community rules however, like say: Posting adult content without a NSFW tag which would make it invisible to minors(and people who do not want to see NSFW) would then get downvoted by the whole Community. Which will hurt.

Because people have the right to post what they want to, they can also interact with who they want to.

Once again, Community plays an important role here. You cannot be alone as there are already people here that like what you like.

I would like to repeat again: Community is key!

blue_bar.jpg

The Community Plan!

It becomes apparent then that building Community is the best course of action for our combind success on Hive. Retaining Hivers, supporting them with great rewards and growth, protecting them from toxic or negative interactions, this is what we need! The whole package is supported by the concept of Community!

I have my "Class of 2022" which are all the people who have started using Hive in 2022 because of me this year. I have 12 so far and I intend to bring on at least 22 this year. They idea was to get each one of them to 50HP. Maybe not all of them will get there, maybe some of them will drop out.

But some will and some won't. What I DO know is that I have 3 students at over 50HP and one more joining them at over 50HP in about 19 hours! Some of the others are just growing slowly.

So there is the "Class of 2022" and there will be a "Class of 2023". I will keep everyone together in this Community. Added to this will be our other friends and family.

We have a "Localized Community" busy forming. People from Table View are growing and reaching critical mass soon. Adoption will be easier as there are more people to interact with that we know. There is further adoption in Cape Town, and in Western Cape, and in South Africa and in the whole world.

I am interested in linking and networking with everyone!

I have no idea what to call it, but I want to put together this general use Community to promote growth and support.

This is is an interesting group of people on Hive. After a while the rewards are not so important as the people and knowledge. The rewards are still here. The bear market is a good time to enjoy them and expand your world.

Indeed!

Collective wisdom is also an important thing to have that Community pushes. Having the younger accounts survive the bear market also determines the success of the platform going forward.

If the platform was always busy with massive adoption, then there would be no need to worry about markets. Sometimes the market will be up or down, but this should still be the go-to platform for creativity, business and Community.

Make the circle bigger. Build them communities. Work together.

Decentralization communication and community is coming.

We need to get together in our groups and converse over the internet, but personal connection is where the problems get solved.

We are not a faceless humanity. So yeah... Community is key.

I know YOU to be a really busy person on Hive. So you dont need to do much else. But I definitely want to direct people to you.

I totally get your point @zakludick,

I remember starting out here. I felt like I was sending blogs into outer space. I would have a better chance of an alien seeing my writing than a human being. Months later I met one friend on the blockchain and kept in touch. He lived half way around the world but our brains still clicked. Then a whole line of like minded people started to follow in line. No one from those early days still makes regular posts, but they still follow and curate posts from time to time.

I have read your profile description and it is impressionable. Every time I read it I smirk at the "handful of certifications in the Air-conditioning trade" part. This time it's because the summer in Korea is too hot. Your field seems like something that may be in high demand.

Indeed. People will always need to make things hot or cold hahaha!

I hope that what I am doing helps the little guys grow and the big guys feel less alone.

Even the big guys on Hive have to go through a lot of work to get people talking and talking to them and each other. I am not a "big guy" but I can help that to happen as well!

Eventually I will become one of the big guys but I also want a hundred more of us to become big guys.

Two more, perhaps, three even more South Africans: @andrastia, @zo3d, @giantbear, and @pandamama who is based in Greece and South African. Her son and his partner are here, too. Can't remember their names.

Zack, I am with you on the retention issue and the complications. It's always been a concern and has a lot to do with why I do what I do with #hivepud. Please tell your community about it?

Thank you for mentioning me. There will be always people who join and leave again or just become inactive. Sometimes they don't understand how Hive works or don't have all then info they need. You can see this when you stumble across posts with just on link in it or copy & paste posts. Also these rules are not new and have been there since I know about blogging long time ago, some people might never heard about this or they don't care.

Community is key

That's right! Which leads into engagement. Just posting will not help you, you have to interact with people. We are saying this all the time on discord and Hive if this topic comes up. I think most people don't do it often enough.

Well, let's see... you blog constantly and give analysis as to why Hive is awesome and amazing and what you want to do with your crypto.

You also have a great amount of HP, showing your commitment.

This, despite your 129 posts, 150 comments and 56 reputation means that you invested. What you need for your blog is just more engagement, which is what my post is about after all.

You are posting a lot, keep it up! You now need to engage just as much. 50% effort or more into engaging on others and keep posting and you will never not grow!

Cheers!

You have put in lots of effort into this Zak, it is a good idea to link up and just keep sharing Hive with friends/family.

A couple of points you mentioned which I do agree with you, I think some newbies would like experiencing spending earned Hive, showing them how that is withdrawn and deposited to their local bank account will do a lot of good in removing the skeptic thoughts.

I can relate to people having a greater interest in Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or the Fediverse. Firstly, some people have over fifteen years invested in those platforms; therefore, there's a greater affinity to say Facebook than Hive.

Comments

Yep, Hive has a comments capability, and of course, it all depends on:

    a. Do you have any (Human) followers?
    b. Do they like you?
    c. How active are they?

With Twitter, for example, you can guarantee that 'someone' will comment. I'd love to see some data on just how many posts on Hive get no love (as in comments) whatsoever. I suspect it's a lot? I also think that Hive doesn't lend itself well to the kind of communication (comments) that you get on other social media platforms. I know I certainly feel that my comments should at least loosely be relevant to the piece of work I'm commenting on, whereas people on Twitter don't give a damn.

"You don't get paid for posting on Facebook!"

This statement irks me, if truth be told. It's mostly put forward as a reason to use Hive by accounts that not only have a few quid in the piggy bank but also receive healthy rewards. I agree that $0.01 is far more than the naff all I would earn posting something on FB, BUT! I will have to post another 99 posts to make $1.00; that's a lot of work for such a small return which makes me think I'd have far more fun with my time chatting to my mates on the Fediverse, and I think that's the point. What is your Time worth?

NO WHALE IS GONNA DROP A BIG VOTE ON YOU!

It must be a nice feeling to know that any post you submit will be at least double figures and that any curation rewards will blow hundreds of those $0.01 posts out of the water. Sadly, low earning accounts don't see it that way. I suspect they ask themselves, "Is it worth it?" and I think my time is worth far more than $0.01!

Oh, stop moaning!

I think these are valid complaints, and we shouldn't ignore them if we want Hive to grow. There's no quick fix; you have to put the work in not only in terms of churning out posts and the quality of your posts but also in building relationships with people and building a following. I'm probably the worst person to comment on "How to succeed with Hive." I'm lazy and have far too many other interests to devote 100% of my time to Hive. Apart from Discord (Ecency), I suspect I spend 3% of my time thinking about or creating a post, so I take my hat off to members who can churn out one or sometimes two posts a day.

Right, back to "I'm on holiday" mode. TTFN

For a lazy person you gave lots of useful feedback.

Indeed, the concept of it not being worth someone's time is irksome, but momentum can only be gained through retention and that retention can grant better momentum.

As I said, getting rewarded for your posts is not and should not be your only reason for being here.

But let's just say that a who City's model airplane club ran their posts, advertising and interactions off of Hive instead of FB? The rewards are a bonus!

And indeed, Whales do not owe us a thing. But what do whales want from us? There are 37 whale accounts who hold 49.5% of staked Hive.

They either run communities or they run DeFi.

They are generally not a content person unless that content is crypto. Some may post other things, but that's not how they became whales.

So most whales want to see adoption happen. People talk about a lot of foreboding sometimes, worried about incurring the wrath of whales. However, every so many hundred people joining Hive brings a certain amount of people who will actually use the businesses and services the whales provide and they will in turn benefit.

They did not become whales on this platform so they can be the only ones on it. They therefore love growth in numbers.

Yes... how many posts make nada? However, it is usually only the accounts that do ZERO engagement that sit with Zero votes on their posts.

Once again, a Community solves everything.

Of course you and I met on Discord and that is why I want to interact with you on the blockchain too!

Hi and happy to help with whatever and would be great to get a group of South Africans growing their Hive stakes. There is already a Hive map of Hiveans if I am not mistaken. I know Hive UK is active and has a list. Maybe a Hive SA account that upvotes content would be a good starting point which we could delegate to. Possibly setting up a discord channel for anyone new and needs assistance would also be helpful to keep everyone active.

Back in the old-blockchain days, before the hard fork, myself and @therneau and some of the others mentioned here were part of a Discord for SA and there is an account of some sort... but I don't think it's a "Community" account per se.

It upvotes me when I use #southafrica.

Well met!

So you are from Johannesburg?

As for a map, that totally in my head, but I could not find one. I know pinmapple is for posts on a map but not exactly people...

There is a map and will have a look where and who has it. Yes from Johannesburg. There are quite a few members in South Africa but not all are very active and would be great to get an account offering a vote. I know how hard it is to grow even though things are far easier today than 4 years ago.

If memory serves, @cheeto.blue created an account for exactly that... called @teamsouthafrica ... there was also a smaller @springbokkie curating bot too by ? @bmj ?

P.S. ... I think @therneau and/or @joanstewart might even still have the posting keys for @teamsouthafrica.

0

Now we need to know which of those are still active. I have now idea! At least there are pings!

0

@therneau & @joanstewart are still active... but all the others have fallen away... even before the HIVE fork.

P.S. Plan B: We start a new "TeamSA" account... I'm sure I could whip together a simple enough NodeJS script to (auto)vote #TeamSA posts if the account's VP is >98%, but the main problem is finding a few curators that will manually vote #TeamSA posts on a daily basis.

The previous TeamSouthAfrica discord worked really well... for a while... and then one by one curators (and authors) started dropping off until the discord became a ghost town.

P.S. I'm quite keen to get it started again (will devote some time to the bot/script, delegate some HP to get it started and even set up the discord etc. etc.)... are you keen to play (and/or find & manage) moderators/curators though?

Oh @therneau and I write a story together for sure. I interact with @joanstewart once in a while. We will either get some of the old group back or build a brand new band!

Another post for that I think.

I call upon @cryptoandcoffee, @therneau, @joanstewart, @joetunex, @lizelle, @fionasfavourites, @papilloncharity and whoever would like to participate in this line of conversation.

A TeamSA or reviving the TeamSouthAfrica group. Let's discuss this!

I am in KZN, yes. Pinetown to be exact. I am not really traveling that much yet, although it is something we would love to do when the time comes. I am currently just sharing photos of interesting places in our area.

@teamsouthafrica makes the most sense... but the problem is that nobody has the owner/active keys for it here on HIVE and the discord (while still there) is also owned/managed by those that have fallen by the wayside.

P.S. @TeamSA / #TeamSA was dominated by ?South Australians? on the previous chain... but I think we can reclaim that one if we form a strong enough ruck 😜😜😜

This reminds me of STEEM days I was new on the chain and still finding my feet, I joined TSA in the Discord back then but wasn't active.

Either reviving the old group or forming a new one will be for same goal, this is something am keen being part of.

Looking at it and I am with @cryptoandcoffee on this. Will advise where I can.

Off hand @fermentedphil (Cape province) and a few others that I know are also saffers. Can't think of their tags right now but will mention them when I see them again.
Oh and @nikv as she is in Johannesburg.

And thank you for the additional people to link. I will add them to the list!

Dropped the link in Discord ages ago if I remember correctly, will have to check.

Many come and go the original setup I think was @cheeto.blue who started the ball rolling may have the keys.

Original list I will DM you put together by @kiligirl and @darnscotty

I was invited by @gingerninja very early respondents to the Team @dragonslayer109, @awgbibb, @therneau.

@jaynie another who tried to revive at one time if my memory serves me well.

Yeah, unfortunately @cheetoblue holds the keys to the @teamsouthafrica account. He shared some keys with me that was on my old Discord username. I've attempted to log into the old one various times, but there's a 2fa issue that keeps blocking me. Ugh, lol

Pity since the footer was also cool that went on the old system, well bygones are just that, perhaps out with the old in with the new.

Perhaps "Indaba South Africa", "South Africa Indaba", "Indaba Africa" 😂

Indeed. It is sad seeing some of the Saffas with big power just sitting there, months or years when they last logged in and a massive store of HP. Surely they could have just delegated the HP to help support others?

They still earn the interest then.

I saw someone with hundreds in unclaimed rewards 😱😱😱

Sometimes a short break planned with recent events, then becomes longer as finding it difficult to get back. Hopefully many will arrive once again.

When balance is left on the account normally a good indicator they will return when ready.

Indeed. I am an example of that. I am happy that I never drained my account when I went idle for 3 years. I could return and become active again! Though I kinda wish now that I never went idle but that is in the past!

My growth this year has been just phenomenal and I am very grateful for that!

Hello @zakludick

Thank you for the mention and for including me :)

It becomes apparent then that building Community is the best course of action for our combind success on Hive.

I agree with you that this is the key to success. Building community is so important and any effort and initiative in this regard I will be interested in and support. So count with me in whatever course of action you think might help.

I suggest the following people be added to the list
@tengolotodo UK - Scotland
@ifarmgirl - The Philippines

Then there's @space2grow - my new little side project... more than just an alt of mine (we're 4 'owners' there), so you might wanna add that one too (also Pretoria).

Over the years I've onboarded about 15 others, but all have fallen by the wayside. Spent the last 2 weeks in Mozambique (STRAB Music Festival) and I think I convinced @baasdebeer to get active again... so add him to your list ;-)

And then there's @coolbluejay that I met over the weekend at STRAB - Saffa living in Mozambique.

Loving this post.
@eylz619 @bloghound and @jane1289 are three awesome ladies from The Philippines of the top of my head.
I did wonder why there was not a TeamSouthAfrica as I met a fair few of you.
I have not onboarded anyone until I make my mind up about Hive.
One thing about new members retention.
In life we are innocent until proven guilty. Judging by some of my experiences on Hive from "older" Hives you are judged guilty until proven innocent.
If that happens to others, then yes I understand why people just don't come back.
I appreciate that many people will join somewhere to abuse the system, but NOT everyone is like that, perhaps some older Hivers might like to remember that!

I believe that it becomes obvious when people are here to network and make content and when they are here to just raid the rewards by doing the minimum... or spam... or plagiarise.

Some people DO bite down too hard on people who make a mistake and that can only really be prevented again by family. Newbies should not walk the road on their own. Like The Terminal guides and trains and supports the Redfish.

I was looking at stats by @arcange here, that were very interesting and sparked some of these thoughts. You see the bit where they show how many Redfish/Minnows/Dolphins/Orcas/Whales there are and it is apparent that there is a MASSIVE amount of Redfish that do not get to Minnow.

I am not saying there should be millions of Dolphins, Orcas and Whales but why so little Minnows? As a community, we need to be able to guide people to THAT goal. I am trying to get my Class of 2022 to 50HP first but when I open up the Class of 2023, then the Class of 2022 will STILL be kept together and aiming for that much larger goal of Minnow status.

I will add those three ladies! Thanks!

Thanks for tagging me here, I had to patiently read through since the information was sinking directly into my head.

I believe that this would be a great project, because I foresee it to be a community that wouldn't just focus on the big names.
I got discouraged during my early days on hive, I stayed away for a few months, and I returned because I met someone who encouraged and guided me on how to interact.

Minnow support is a great thing that would definitely bring and encourage more users to stay on the platform. I would definitely love to be part of the community and contribute the best way I can.

0

avatar

Same 🥰.. I was discouraged at first but due to motivational posts of a few writers I know here, I came back and starts to engage with the community

0
0
0.000
avatar

Indeed. It is discouraging to not be supported.

Community is needed. I am a writer and I love it when I get a Curie, but I also like it when someone makes a comment about my work. They can tell me they enjoyed it, they can ask questions or they can relate to something that happened. That is just as important to the author as the money.

Money does not inspire us as much as people think. There are lazy people at work every day. There are even lazy homeless people.

It is whether or not the thing we are doing matters to us.

Thanks for the tag @jane1289!
I've not been in the Philippines for many years now (and not going back soon either) so I think it should be Japan 😅

Regarding the post, yeah I also noticed that after dropping their introduction post, people get inactive. There are a bunch of factors of the reason why, and aside from what you stated, maybe some also has other priorities that's why they can't be active in the platform at most times. They pop here, drop posts, then go on with their lives again. They don't really have the time to engage hence their posts get a low amount. Then they get discourage or totally forget about the platform. Can't blame them for having other priorities and not engage here. Maybe in this situation, the people who onboarded them should help them or I don't know, running out of ideas too. 😅

0
0
0.000
avatar

Haha.. You already said it and I agree..
That was me before when I was just new.. Seeing a few cents on my posts was demotivating..
But the only key here is actually community engagement to grow and build a name.

0
0
0.000
avatar

Yeah, your bubble will only be small when you start, so those people in your bubble are the only ones who know about you. To expand the bubble, you need to let more people in and we do this by engagement. Well, aside from making quality content, that is :)

0
0
0.000
avatar

Well said.. 🥰.. And that's how you grow in a short period.. You are amazing..

0
0
0.000
avatar

I get that a lot. "I do not have time."

But most people spend loads of time on other dalliances. Facebook, netflix, watching soap operas. Whatever it is that they do. I am not saying that those things are wrong, I want to highlight that most people have SOME free time if they are on the internet.

This means it is a case of priority. It is not enough to just have a platform where you earn crypto. You need a community, a home, a reason to come and see and take part.

Web 3.0 has WAY more potential than just making money... but it does that too so that's awesome!

0

Completely agree! It's a matter of priority.
I guess they are yet to find that potential because they haven't dug deep yet.

But....
Depending on how you run the autovotes, you could fall foul of people who monitor delegate for upvote schemes or get tag abusers posting for the upvote. This will need to be monitored.
About the discords, there's a long and messy history there of a second community that was created and then abandoned by its creator but I don't know if the original TSA Discord is still in existence. Send me a message via peakd if you want to chat about it

I returned back to the blockchain end of last year after a 3 year break.

Some are still here, some are inactive and some are brand new.

It's been tickling me for a long time now but I decided that it was time to put everyone together, as much as possible.

Stellenbosch is not too far for organising a braai hey?

We've been having busy weekends so this weekend we are chilling, but... next weekend, @clairemobey were thinking if having a Braai and inviting @therneau, @jusipassetti, @lex-zaiya and their family/partner.

They are so awesome all together. Together with the kids, that makes 9 people with Hive accounts at the braai.

You are welcome to pitch in!

@jasperdick and family might also want to come through if they were able.

And THIS would be the phenomenal part... organising a braai on Hive... hahahaha!
