African Timing Mentality - ATM?

avatar

The African Time thing has really eaten deep into our minds that whenever the time for something is being set, you will see or hear some people unconsciously mention the African time. And at times, most people purposely delay going to some events, occasions, or programs because of the African time mindset.
We tend to let this get in the way, and sometimes it ruins people's life.
They don't seem to stick to time or take some things seriously. Imagine having a job interview let's say by 8 AM and the interviewee is going there by 8:10, 8:15, or more. Whereas they are supposed to be there some minutes earlier waiting for their interviewer.
Some have missed important occasions or even opportunities because of this African Time mentality.

I have been a victim many times so I wouldn't pretend to be a saint here, no I am not. I made the exact mistake too sometimes and I am not always happy about it.
One very bad experience of the African time I had is going to an event just a little late and the bus that was to convey us left me behind. It was painful and I felt very bitter about it, but if I am to ask, whose fault was it? Mine of course for arriving at the venue for the departure late. Another experience was making a friend wait for me for about 30 minutes or so on our first date/sit-out. I felt awkward and very uncomfortable, I kept apologizing the whole time as if I did something very wrong. I know it wasn't nice to have kept him waiting but I had an excuse or reason on my part but I mean it wasn't nice or fair, it's not something I would like someone doing to me.

But among my friends and peers, I could do that without feeling so bad or too sorry about it cause I will always know how to handle or deal with matters pertaining to my close friends. But when it has to do with elderly people or people beyond my age, class, or status, I try as much as possible not to give the bad impression about not being punctual or not keeping to time and all.

How Can We Eradicate The ATM?

Whenever the term African Time is used, it's more like saying that one will be an hour late to something or an hour after the actual time slated for anything. It happens that if a program or an event was slated for 3 PM, then it is assumed that according to African time, the event will only kick start at 4 PM or people will only start trooping in by 4 PM or latest 3:30 PM.
If you have ever had bad experiences pertaining to this issue of African time then you would probably understand this, especially if you are a Nigerian. I can't speak for others cause I only know about my country, how they operate and how things work over here

I don't wish to experience the dilemma of African timing more than I have already, so I believe it can be eradicated cause I don't think I am the only one that has been affected by this or the only one playing the victim here.
Some of us have had our awful timing experiences even if we don't or won't share them here.
So how then can we eradicate the African Timing mentality and approach?

Remember this is a question and I can't say I have an appropriate answer for it so I would rather ask for the opinion of others and perhaps apply their suggestions and answer or put them to great use. So I would really appreciate every individual that stops by to give their input on this topic and provide possible solutions to this disease as well.
Thank you for reading from me today, see you guys around.

Heheeh 😂😂😂 lolz this is just very true lol, this is the typical Nigerian for you oh, even I who is here do this same thing, well well it is actually not our fault, we didn't actually develop this habit at once, it is something that will lead to something...

On various ocassions I have gone to patties before time and on getting there it takes extra two hours for them to start the party, do you think if that happens in about two to three other events, will I still be going before time to such event, I will rather go at my own convenience....

I think this is something that can't be fully controlled, we have experienced a lot of things, most people don't do this with something that is very very important like job interview but if it's hangout or party they will come during or one Hour after the party just to AVOID unnecessary sitting..

Have you even been to an event very early and you end up doing some work before the time????
This is crazier and one of the reason we don't go on time lolz 😂🤣

I have o 😂💔 I have actually been given an ushering duty just because I arrived an event earlier. So I can relate.

Well, you are right about avoiding the unnecessary wasting of time in an event or occasion, so going at your convenience is good sometimes but like you said, not in an important thing like an interview.

I really appreciate your honest and thoughtful opinion.
Thanks for reading from me and leaving an input too.
