EU finance ministers say a digital euro raises important policy choices

Eurogroup members say a CBDC in Europe would have implications in terms of environmental impact, as well as inherent privacy, financial stability and related issues.

The European group consisting of the finance ministers of the Eurozone countries issued a joint statement on plans for the creation of a digital euro, indicating that the implementation of such a currency would entail decisions to be taken at a strictly political level.

Regarding the plans for the development of a digital currency by the European Central Bank, the group considers that this initiative, which is in the research and design phase, is relevant, but considers that the specifics of the technology used and the characteristics that the new currency would have should be subject to certain important considerations.

In this regard, according to a report by Cointelegraph, the officials listed some issues they were considering in this regard, among which they highlighted the environmental impact of a currency with these properties, privacy concerns, financial stability and other related issues.
