Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

white-belt curriculum1.jpg

I have trained Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for 10 years. It was one of the first regular segments I featured way back in 2018 on STEEM. I figured the blockchain was a great place to permanently share the beginners curriculum for the world to share at will. I can't remember if I was a blue belt or maybe a fresh purple belt back then but the progression goes white, blue, purple, brown, black and then demigod.

How it's going

Earlier this year, I was asked to hang up my tattered and comfy purple belt to make way for my brown belt. I have never been in a hurry to progress through belts as having a close group to train with, learn how to choke a bitch, and stay in shape is good enough for me.

How It's Gone

This image may lead you to believe I am an absolute killer and I compete incessantly, beating the best of the best. Definitely not true as competition is a trial for me and I only do it for the sake of personal evolution and serving as an example for the others at the academy. Either way, I have done more than my share of learning on the way to any winning.

BJJ in Covid Times

This https://stratfordbjj.com crew has resiliently powered through a tough couple of years with Covid as I cannot imagine an easier way to spread that than grappling with someone. Lockdowns, secret garage training sessions, reopening, vaccination passports, limitations, full open and now a lockdown again. Tough enough on the personal side when so much of your physical and mental well-being relies on this pastime. Imagine what that is like for the owner of the academy, not being able to do business as usual while still only a few years into building an independently owned business in a small town.

Here you can see a snip of what we miss so much. Just over 3 minutes worth of some of our advanced partners open sparring, or, as we call it, 'rolling'.

Back to the curriculum, that was a while ago. I assembled all of the posts in one for that one-stop shopping reference here https://steemit.com/steemitbjj/@zekepickleman/white-belt-bjj-curriculum-all-in-one-place Turns out, there is a copy on at least one other blockchain here! https://hive.blog/steemitbjj/@zekepickleman/white-belt-bjj-curriculum-all-in-one-place

Here was the first video we did, of the first class of the white belt curriculum years ago. Humble beginnings and great memories. The main message is becoming aware and protecting yourself in the street. Perfect place to start and a great thing to keep in mind as you sink into the sport jiu jitsu mindset.

With the latest lockdown, we are working on leveraging the free time, upping our technology game, and recording the Blue Belt Curriculum! Not a universal one per se but the one we follow because of our lineage and the one we have used across the globe from Brazil.

Get Moving!

Here is the first video which is a great group of exercises to not only make you more active and agile, but made fun for the kids too. It is also a test of the new filming technology. Either way, we are hoping for a return to operation around Jan 26th but are prepared for an extension of the lockdown, or at least big restrictions for fitness facilities like ours.

Stay Tuned for more BJJ tales if we open soon. Otherwise, you will have the Blue Belt Curriculum!

I lived in Brazil for a bit. I need to learn a skill from there.

Bjj would be a good one! Ryan’s professor came straight from Brazil, training with the Gracies. So good to have a short path to the legends and train under a full time bjj black belt still competing on the world stage.

Brazilian cooking would be good to learn too. ;)

Absolutely phenomenal and we definitely need to do more with the martial arts community.
My Filipino martial arts have definitely complimented my Brazilian jiu jitsu skills.

This one time I had a student I was working with while multiple BJJ coaches were watching and I hit a wrist lock resulting in this guy tapping and then complaining about how that was illegal and that didn't count.

The instructors told him the reason why you don't have access to those techniques is you are a much more inexperienced person than the coach that's rolling with you. It is super hard to pull off any wrist lock that they were super surprised and tickled to see because only an idiot would get caught in that.

Only an idiot would get caught in it because it was supposed to be just a threat to get them to react which then gave me an opening. However I just scored the tap so I'll take that one right to the bank.

Of course wrist locks are legal in BJJ.

Martial arts are extremely important and congratulations on making Brown. 20 years white for me...

Oh wrist locks are completely legal blue belt and up. I use them as a catch move when white belts are starting to get close to blue belt, and as an arsehole move to cause that reaction like you were.

So good to spread the martial arts love across the blockchain. May it inspire people do discover this fun activity and walk with more confidence.

All is legal love war and jiu-jitsu...

And only an idiot would get caught in a wrist lock. Unless you're going against me and then I'm pretty famous for catching one.

I have always wanted to learn bjj. I scored a green belt manual at a garage sale one time, though it was for another art, but I forget. Even though it was for a different art, it led me to check out this bjj class. I really thought it was something. I used to train in TKD, which I loved! I enjoyed kicking things. Recently I've been in FMA, learning Serrada and Giron. Now I really enjoy hitting things with a stick. But that one class I got to watch really opened my mind up. I really enjoyed your post on white belt. I was also someone not trying to fly through belts. It was better to just be at the class and train. I was always surprised when I moved up. I upvoted you and want to share !pizza . Thank you for a great post!

Ah yes!

I don’t get into any debates about which martial arts are best. They are all great for the body and mind. Plus is is better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war.

I agree. Martial arts in general is amazing. I'm on a constant path of self improvement and they all hold a piece of puzzle. Thanks for sharing your way, I look forward to more!

Must be really difficult for the owner. I hope things go back to normal again so people can enjoy what they love doing. Don't know much about Jiu Jitsu and I'm sure it is very different from Kobra Kai lol. I'm pretty sure my daughter would love it.

It has been tough for gym owners for sure. Good thing is that the government started printing money and handing it out like Oprah so he has managed to stay in business and do some improvements.

I had my daughters start training when they were like 6 and it has made a world of difference. I wish I had the confidence in highschool my daughter has now that she has trained a few years.

An absolute must for kids to try it out in my opinion. I would make it mandatory for law enforcement officers as well.

Good thing the government does something to help. You are a great dad for getting them trained early. I'm sure no one messes with them. A great character builder in life.
