Hi, friend @emiliorios—I’ve been meaning to contribute to this topic for a few days now. You addressed it very well; it’s both interesting and important when it comes to grief.

But lately, it seems like for some people, grieving is kind of easy—they use it as a shield to hide the true feelings it brings up, like the saying that grief is something you carry inside, not out in the open for others to see.

image.png

Everyone copes with grief differently, but it’s something that will last forever—it’s more intense at first, and as time goes by, it eases, but it will never go away.

When there’s a death in the family, there’s almost always one family member who has the most control over the situation. Even though they carry the pain inside, someone has to be the one to handle all the arrangements.

As the days go by, great care must be taken with the family, because there are those who cannot accept the grief right away—they cannot come to terms with the loss of their loved one—and they must not be left alone; they need a lot of companionship.

image.png

I’ve seen cases—thank God, not in my own family, but in others—where, when someone dies, in the days or months leading up to the one-year anniversary of their passing, the family member who spent the most time with them—such as the mother, father, sibling, grandchild, spouse, or children—falls into a deep depression that gradually distances them from reality, until they, too, pass away, forgetting about everyone else, believing their own life is over, along with the person who died. For example, the father of a friend of my daughter’s—who had been ill—passed away, and a few days later, the friend’s grandfather died; he couldn’t get over the death of his son.

In cases like this, you mustn’t leave the person alone; surround them with hugs and affection. If necessary, take them to a specialist—even if they refuse—and do so gradually, teaching them that life goes on, that they should thank God for the time they shared, and that their loved one is now another angel who will watch over them.

Now, as for my family, my grandmother—who was more like a second mother to me—passed away about 30 years ago, and it’s something that still hurts. When the dates of her birthday on earth or the anniversary of her passing approach, my heart aches, but I thank God that I had her for so many years—more so than those grandchildren who had only a short time with her, or those who never got to know her at all. What I learned from her is that she was always with me. I cry and I laugh, because she was so cheerful, but she was struck by an illness that made her suffer a lot in the end, and it was better for her to rest in peace, because seeing her suffer like that wasn’t good for her—or for us to see her that way.

Then my dad passed away 20 years ago. Ever since he gathered us together and told us he had cancer, it was as if he were helping us prepare for what might come—we didn’t know when, but so that it wouldn’t be such a shock. I don’t mean to sound too harsh, but I can accept it more if a person dies from an illness, no matter their age, but living with an incurable illness isn’t really living—so it’s better to rest. That’s what he used to say: he didn’t want to suffer too much, and when the time came, he wanted it to be quick. That’s how my dad passed away—in his sleep.

It’s very different when you hear that someone died in an accident—mostly a traffic accident—or because someone took their life, or because they took their own life. It’s much more intense and traumatic. It happened to a friend of mine, who apparently made us all think and believe that he was fine, After his surgery, he was living his normal life, but then suddenly he took his own life. For all of us who knew him, we were left in shock—I still ask myself: What happened to make him do that? Only he and God would know the extent of his suffering.

But there are people who are more fragile and vulnerable than others; they don’t know how to cope with that grief.

My reflections are based on my own experiences and those of people close to me.
