Autumn Roads, Abandoned Places, and Silent Guardians. My brief story.

(Edited)

Hello again, friends and strangers.

I am visiting my hometown again, trying to escape the round-the-clock Russian attacks, the wailing sirens, and the lack of electricity and water. But on the day I arrived, a jet-powered drone reached this place for the first time. A person was killed. Since then, these attacks have become a daily occurrence. And yet, it is still much better here than in Kyiv right now. Besides, the inverter at our home broke down on the day I left. I am writing this under another air raid.

My arrival coincided with a beautiful autumn season, when it wasn't yet too cold and the landscapes were enchanting with their rich, diverse colors. I spent seven and a half hours behind the wheel with barely a break. Gas stations close during air raid alerts as a likely targets, and there was an alert for most of the day. However, the scenery was so stunning that it made up for my fatigue and hunger.

We had one sunny, warm day over the weekend, so my daughter and I drove out of town to enjoy the enchanting beauty of autumn and visit a few places in neighbourhoods where we had never been before. All pictures here are taken with my smartphone (More are coming in a better quality).

Our first stop was an abandoned Catholic church. No photograph can capture the atmosphere of this place. While searching for an entrance amidst the thickets, we spotted a huge owl. It flew silently beneath the tree canopy, perched on a large branch, and watched us.

The next stop was the Rey estate. It, too, was abandoned and partially ruined, even though a convent had been there just twenty years ago. Everything becomes overgrown and falls into decay so quickly. It is so strange and sad.

What does autumn look like in your area? And what small things bring you comfort right now?

I'm sorry to hear of the continued attacks! Your photos are hauntingly beautiful. The first couple of pictures of the leaves could have been taken in northern Minnesota, the landscape is very similar. Our leaves have begun turning colors and falling. This will likely be our last warm day of the year. I'm finding myself craving heartier foods like-- stews, meatloaf, and chili. Very soon we'll be firing up the wood stove for the first time of the season. Take care of yourself my friend and have a good week! Your book has arrived in Warsaw, Poland and should be entering the Ukraine within the next couple of days.

Oh, please, don't say so, it sounds too sad 💔 The Indian summer is coming! The wood stove is plus 100 points to the cozyness 🥰

The book will likely arrive right on my return home. Perfect!

Thank you for your heartwarming comment, and have the most wonderful week ❤️

Writing this under an air raid alert just feels surreal and exhausting. Spotting that owl near the abandoned church sounds like a rare moment of magic during such a heavy time.

My first adult owl 😎 It was so exciting.

Air raids is exhausting endeed, and living under constant danger. I came here to calm down and rest but seems there is no safe place ☹️

Great Autumn is nice and abandoned places are also nice to visit but it can be quite dangerous if you don't know the spot since bricks can fall of or you can break through the floor.

Agree, but this is a better way to die than from a Russian missile 😉

Hello my dear, I'm sorry to hear about all the raids in Kyiv again, and spreading out to your hometown is not good.

The Rey Estate looks quite grand, even amongst the ruins. It's so sad that's it's become derelict now.

Take care, as always 😘

I’m glad to switch gears a bit and spend time with my mom and daughter, as well as visit places I never usually have time for 🙂

What stories those walls could tell, I love the church in particular I guess it was left to ruin during Soviet times and never renovated.
