THE FRENCH REVOLUTION

So imagine it’s late 1700s France, the country looks fancy on the outside palaces, wigs, powdered faces, expensive cakes and banquets but inside? It’s basically a financial group chat where nobody is replying and the bill is overdue. At the top, you’ve got King Louis XVI, a sort of well meaning guy who is really not built for crisis management and his wife, Marie Antoinette, who is constantly (probably unfairly) remembered for saying “let them eat cake,” which is basically the 18th-century version of being misquoted in a viral tweet forever.

Meanwhile, France is divided into three “Estates” which are the Clergy (Church people), the Nobility (rich elites living soft lives) and everyone else (99% of France doing all the work and paying all the taxes) Guess who’s mad? Yeah, the 3rd Estate is out here paying bills or high taxes, farming, starving, and basically running the entire country while the top two groups are living like it’s infinite wealth. So in 1789, the 3rd Estate says “Actually… we are forming our own assembly, thanks.” They break off and create the National Assembly. Think of it like a corporate employees’ revolt where they decide they are now the real company, because quite rightly they do all the work.

The king tries to resist, but things escalate quickly, bread prices are high. The people are hungry and then comes the big moment, Bastille Day (July 14, 1789). A Paris mob storms the Bastille prison, which at that point doesn’t even have many prisoners. but it symbolises something huge. It’s like destroying the “system” button in real life. Now things are officially out of control. Revolutionaries and ancient days activists start rewriting France. They introduce ideas like liberty and equality which translated to them saying “No more special treatment for nobles, everyone reset.”

Then things get darker, the king tries to escape France (spoiler: he fails). People lose trust in him completely and in 1793, France goes full chaos mode and decides. “Let’s execute the king.” So Louis XVI gets beheaded by guillotine. Marie Antoinette follows soon after. Now you’d think things calm down. Nope, then the reign of Terror begins. Led by Robespierre, this phase is basically paranoia turned up to 100. If someone even looked like they might disagree with the revolution, they could end up executed. The guillotine becomes very busy. Eventually, even Robespierre gets caught in the same system he created… and gets executed too. Classic “you became the villain you warned everyone about” arc.

After all this chaos, France is exhausted. People are tired of executions and instability. So what do they do? They decide “We need stability… badly.” and in walks a young military guy named Napoleon Bonaparte, who says, “I got you.” He rises through the chaos, takes control and eventually crowns himself Emperor, basically ending the revolution by turning it into a new empire with a different boss. So yeah, the French Revolution starts with inequality and hunger… and ends with Napoleon saying “I’ll handle it from here”

History lesson complete. No cake was eaten.
