Stop the world, I wanna get off! Star trail photography with a rare working windmill

(Edited)

I recently realised this windmill is only 10 miles away from me and the skies are relatively dark so it's ideal for star trail photography.

Here I've positioned the top of the windmill so that Polaris (the north star) is more or less lined up. I then shot a test shot for exposure, in this case 30 seconds at around f4, ISO 2000. Then I programmed the Sony A7 to take 120 x 30 second exposures with a one second interval and set the camera running. During the shooting sequence I lit the mill with a @lightpaintingbrushes colour hood. Once the sequence was finished, I opened all 120 images as a stack in Photoshop and selected lighten blend mode. Job done apart from cloning plane trails which is somewhat akin to finding needles in haystacks!

About me: I specialise in shooting lightpainting images all in one photographic exposure which involves different elements with different lenses and tripods. (Although in this shot it's a stack!)

Good god 120 image stack? That's dedication to the art! Very nice!

Thanks mate, my record has been 240 shots although it pushed my PC to the limit lol Ended up processing them in three batches of 80 and then layer blending the 3 resulting TIFF files. Even at 120 it's a bit boring waiting for the sequence to finish...
