The Story Behind The Picture...

When I first got my new camera I really wanted to capture closeups of the moon, inspired by @papilloncharity and @traciyork's photography!

I did that and was quite pleased with my efforts. If you care to check them out you can see the images of the full moon I took on Friday 13th here.

Next I wanted to capture birds in flight and the migratory birds (again inspired by @papilloncharity's photography and he even gave me a tip for capturing birds in flight - to track the lead bird then you will get your shots.)

I caught a few photos of the geese flying over the treetops taken from the hilltop we would walk too but I wasn't really satisfied with that.

Earlier this fall we went for a drive to some of the lakes in our area hoping to capture some photos of the migratory birds but no such luck - there were no flocks of birds by the beaches. ( I did manage to get some beautiful lake shots though!)

When I was out with my granddaughter I asked her if she wanted to stop at the weir to see if there were any birds there. She said "sure." And there was loads of birds! Mostly geese but some ducks.

I didn't have my camera but asked if she wanted to go back to the house and grab the camera and her dad's binoculars, again she said "sure." I'm happy we did!

I was taking dozens of photos of the birds - some by the shore and some out at the sandbar but none of them were birds in flight.

We caught some photos of the cormorant which dives under the water and resurfaces in different spots. My granddaughter was spotting for me to let me know where it surfaced.

Just after that a small group of geese took flight over the weir to get to the other side. I missed that group but more geese had moved to the edge of the weir which I was hopeful would take flight. Instead of flying over they came to the shore and walked around the weir - humph!

I thought I was out of luck on capturing some birds in flight but as luck has it, a couple of dogs met along the path right by the weir and started barking at each other. This scared the geese and they moved away from the shore.

Would they take flight now?

My granddaughter was beginning to feel like she had had enough and wanted to go home but I kept her engaged seeing if the geese might yet fly over the weir because they were so close.

I had my camera steadied on a railing and aimed - sure enough one took off, followed by another, then another and another and I got a whole series of shots!

We were all happy, for my granddaughter got to see the geese united back with their friends, I got my pictures and the geese were happily swimming downstream with their buddies!

You can visit my post to see all the photos I shared from my visit to the weir plus some others of migratory birds on a pond right by the road which was on my way home. Of course I stopped to take photos!

All I did to my photos was to crop and resize them in Snagit Editor for putting them up on the net.

All photos were taken with my PowerShot SX 60HS on auto using the zoom lens. (I'm still learning how to use the other settings on my camera.)

This was my entry for the Behind The Photo Contest where you can find the stories behind the photos instead of just the photos themselves. Details are here

I love photos of birds one motion when they come out well. Most of mine end up a blur, but that's what you get with an automatic point and shoot, I guess; luck of the draw.
