TIME FOR SOME TORPOR

avatar

Was talking to my neighbor about hummingbirds when she heard that they sleep up-side down... I just nodded but found that hard to believe. Maybe she had them confused with bats...

Went on line this morning and found out it was true... here is a video showing one sleeping upside down... Thought bird lovers out there would appreciate it...

Being such an active bird with unique flying ability. They can fly backward, sideways, and straight up. Flapping their wings up to 52 beats per second demands lots of energy. That is why they consume half their body weight per day of sugar. Feeding 5 to 8 times per hour on the nectar of flowers. They also eat small insects, tree sap and juice of broken fruits.

With having such a physically active life it seem natural the Hummingbirds would need a very restful sleep to keep things going...The "Torpor" sleep provides the deep sleep the little bird needs...Torpor describes a deep sleep condition like hibernation where the metabolism slows with a reduction of body temperature.

They will use topor to save energy when food is scarce or when nights are cold...

That is interesting, because of course I did not know about the upside down sleeping.

Seems a little vunerable to sleep that deep in such an open area though...right?
