My visit to the ruins of the ancient fortress of Kalamita.

Hi friends.

Last year, I spent one weekend in the vicinity of my city. I visited the ruins of an ancient Byzantine fortress called Kalamita.

The fortress was built by the Byzantines at the turn of the V-VI centuries ad, to protect trade routes.

The fortress passed from hand to hand for nearly a thousand years. After the Byzantines, the fortress was owned by the Principality of Feodoro, then it was recaptured by the Genoese... As a result, the fortress was taken over by the Turks.

The fortress was rebuilt many times. The stone was taken from a local quarry. Hermit Christians settled in the places where the stone was worked.

The walls of the fortress were four or five meters thick. But with the advent of more advanced artillery, it lost its former significance. Around the fortress lived a small number of local people as well as 50 people of the Turkish military garrison.

The fortress was completely deserted after almost a thousand years of its existence. Not far from it, the Turks built a small town of Inkerman. Since that time, the fortress has almost collapsed, but there is a cave monastery in which a dozen monks still live.
