Wednesday Walk: life, people and buildings along Yaowarad Road in China Town

avatar

This is my entry for #wednesdaywalk hosted by @tattoodjay. Whenever I get bored, I would take a bus to Yaowarad road which is known as China Town or go to visit some old temples. The bus raced pass rows of shop-houses; the bus driver must have been a reincarnated off road racer.

A few days ago, I was happily taking pictures along Yaowarad road, absorbing the changing rhythms of life and seeing the contrast between old and new architecture. The first bus stop at the start of China Town is right beside this Bodhisattva Shrine situated within Tienfa Foundation.

This road is usually very busy and traffic jam is expected as a routine. But things seem to be slowing down lately, though there are more people waiting at bus stops. The gold shops along the road are not as crowded as two months ago as gold prices have made new highs several times. During the first new high, lots of people rushed to sell their gold jewelries, but now they are waiting for more dramatic prices.

There are shops selling dried shredded pork in special package so this will last for months. These shops are very popular with Chinese tourists where they would stock up before returning home. My Chinese grand-mother used to stand for hours in front of the charcoal stove cooking a big pan of sliced pork. It took more than a day to cook these pork slices until they became dried like cotton wool. This dried shredded wooly pork was perfect for those on a long journey in the old days. Now, I am really missing my grand-mother for she often cooked this for me to have with rice soup or warm congee whenever I got a cold.

This is a popular shop for dried shredded pork. There are two kinds of dried pork: the light wooly type and square thin slices just like slices of cheese.

So glad to see lots of people in front of the entrance to the old market.

The sign of changes can be seen in the disappearing of old buildings built during the reign of King RamaV and during the sixties. Most original buildings were over a hundred years old as this road was built under King RamaV ‘s project of modernisation of Siam. English and European merchants were increasingly attracted to Siam; trading and commerce started to boom with sudden material progress. This was when poor Chinese immigrants made their first million and became tycoons three generations later.

The design of the new building above reminds me of the Great Wall in China! But the old buildings of over a hundred years old in yellow paint looks more harmonious, friendly and reflects the craftsmanship ship of past generation. We only recently have started to pass law on listed old buildings for preservation. I hope those remaining old buildings of cultural and architectural heritage will be preserved in time.

Wishing you a very nice weekend.

Cheers.

I agree that the old buildings look so much better than the new ones. I am so happy that the law was passed to preserve the old buildings as heritage must not be forgotten. I laughed at your description of "dried shredded wooly pork. Wooly? Doesn't sound like something to eat. LOL!

Thanks so much for your comment!
Well, imagine wool in terms of light shredded pork: it’s wool made of light brown pork, very much like wool fiber!

Oh, your Wednesday Walks are so much fun!! I love how you take me down to the old section and I can peruse the historical section. The United States started decades ago in saving historical structures and preserving them. Of course, yours are much, much older and so much more interesting! :)

I love Chinatown and we have a Chinatown in Washington, DC also. Doesn't every city have one? I will have to get a picture of the gate into the city, it is fabulous!

I like the look of the old mixed with some new, but, I don't like when the new overshadows the old. The old should be revered and loved, taken care of. They have served us well and deserve more than a crane taking it down, making room for the brighter, shinier building.

The shredded dried pork sounds like something I would love!! I make shredded pork, but, it is not dried.

I love the sights and the sounds that I know are coming from the street! Thank you for taking us! It looks like a lovely day to be walking about!

Thank you very much for your generous tip and a very nice comment.
I wish most people here felt the same way you do about old and historical buildings.

I will have to take photo of the shop selling dried shredded pork one day. I think the old Chinese women invented this for their soldier-husbands on a long journey. But the knowledge was lost in mainland China, it seems to me that one tribe or dialect of the Chinese continues to carry on with the recipe. You could have it sweetened or slightly salty!
Once nicely packed in air-tight container, it will last for months, but we usually finish it in a few weeks!

Have a wonderful Sunday!

I try to stay active on Steemit but I don't know if it's a good investment in time. What do you think?

It depends on the amount of rewards you could earn from it, I suppose! Most whales and big fish who make a lot of money just see it as a good investment.
So many Dapp’s have been coming out and those SMT tokens! I really cannot catch up with blockchain development!

It’s a learning process for me!

I agree. It seems like the way it is set up now, it's a great investment for the whales. I guess we'll have to see what develops for the little guy with the SMT's.

! What a tragedy that is! I cannot believe that big business has displaced families been there for Generations upon Generations. There will never be any justice seen. I have to wonder if they even gave them money to make their move feel little bit easier financially.

I must say that I really looked forward to read it more as soon as I song that you were going back home to where you belonged, Once Upon a Time. It feels funny for me to go back to where I was when I was a kid. It feels right but so much has changed for me. I can feel the calmness in your writing as you stepped off the bus and passed the shop houses, the ones with the hardware. Are Chinatown is very much like this in the way that the shops are downstairs in the living quarters are upstairs and it's all compacted put into one area and it's just lovely. I can feel the Harmony and the camaraderie.

How disappointing to come up on this construction site and even though they believe it's for the better, how many people have they change their lives forever and not in a good way. I don't believe that every renovation is good hello it's nice to have things kept up so they don't disintegrate. How did it feel to go by the old corner? I'm glad to see that they let some of the local merchants stay stationed at the space next to their building. We have a lot of men working at sewing machines. Most are either Asian or Italian. All are excellent tailors.

Every time I think about the roach droppings, it makes me sick thinking about you as a little girl drinking man and I hope for whatever reason that they did this that it did what it was supposed to do! I would never do it if I knew what it was. Even as a kid. I would probably throw up. Did I ever tell you that cockroaches scare me stupid? Thank you so much for this heartwarming story and a peek at the area where you grew up. Yes yes! Everything is made in China. That was a no-go where I live to. And suddenly, is not.

My apologies for leaving you until almost last and I think it was a perfectly beautiful story and post. Thank you for sharing this with us and as always I wish you a most wonderful day.

#MarketFriday loves you!

I think you have double your work here!
But you were right about my feeling while walking along the road once I got off the bus. I had followed the legal struggle between local people and the development company; people list their case in court and had to move out. Most people had become sufficiently well off to be able to buy new houses but a few old ladies and families had to moved to live with their distant relatives far away from Bangkok.

The old hundred years old community had disappeared! So, life is full of uncertainty, we called this ‘anijja’ or impermanence in Buddhism. We all have to accept ‘what is’ which we had no power to change and carry on the best we could.

But I do believe in karmic law, the bad karma will catch up with greedy businessmen in one way or another. I happened to learn if their family’s health problem lately. We believe that there are reasons or causes for all happenings! If we had to accept the situation, we just had to get on with the next chapter in our life as soon as we could. Then, perhaps our good karma will look after us somehow. It’s just like ‘when the door is shut, there is always a window left opened by God’. We just have to look for it instead of moaning too long.

Everyone has some kind of problems so life is like a test and a learning process. So, Buddhists tend to accumulate good karma just in case they might need to withdraw the good karma credit on times of trouble! And we believe that the good angels will be moved by one’s good deeds and will inspire someone to offer some help when needed.

I used to be very horrified by cockroaches as their faces look very weird! But, nowadays I just try to avoid them when I see them and ask them to stay still. They used to frighten me as a child, but no more.

Have a nice day!
Thanks for your hard work too.
