Wednesday Walk: life, people and buildings along Yaowarad Road in China Town

This is my entry for #wednesdaywalk hosted by @tattoodjay. Whenever I get bored, I would take a bus to Yaowarad road which is known as China Town or go to visit some old temples. The bus raced pass rows of shop-houses; the bus driver must have been a reincarnated off road racer.

A few days ago, I was happily taking pictures along Yaowarad road, absorbing the changing rhythms of life and seeing the contrast between old and new architecture. The first bus stop at the start of China Town is right beside this Bodhisattva Shrine situated within Tienfa Foundation.

This road is usually very busy and traffic jam is expected as a routine. But things seem to be slowing down lately, though there are more people waiting at bus stops. The gold shops along the road are not as crowded as two months ago as gold prices have made new highs several times. During the first new high, lots of people rushed to sell their gold jewelries, but now they are waiting for more dramatic prices.

There are shops selling dried shredded pork in special package so this will last for months. These shops are very popular with Chinese tourists where they would stock up before returning home. My Chinese grand-mother used to stand for hours in front of the charcoal stove cooking a big pan of sliced pork. It took more than a day to cook these pork slices until they became dried like cotton wool. This dried shredded wooly pork was perfect for those on a long journey in the old days. Now, I am really missing my grand-mother for she often cooked this for me to have with rice soup or warm congee whenever I got a cold.

This is a popular shop for dried shredded pork. There are two kinds of dried pork: the light wooly type and square thin slices just like slices of cheese.

So glad to see lots of people in front of the entrance to the old market.

The sign of changes can be seen in the disappearing of old buildings built during the reign of King RamaV and during the sixties. Most original buildings were over a hundred years old as this road was built under King RamaV ‘s project of modernisation of Siam. English and European merchants were increasingly attracted to Siam; trading and commerce started to boom with sudden material progress. This was when poor Chinese immigrants made their first million and became tycoons three generations later.

อาทิตย์ก่อนเรามีเวลาไปเที่ยวเล่น จึงขึ้นรถเมล์ไปเที่ยวถนนเยาวราช เราชอบดูความเปลี่ยนแปลงที่เกิดขึ้นในย่านไชน่าเทาวน์ ชอบดูผู้คนที่เดินกันขวักไขว่ และดูตึกเก่าๆที่ยังคงหลงเหลืออยู่ สิ่งที่เห็นได้ชัดเจนคือมีนักท่องเที่ยวมาน้อยลง และถนนเยาวราชมีความคล่องตัวมากขึ้น การจราจรติดขัดน้อยลงด้วย บรรดาร้านทองก็เงียบเหงา ไม่แน่นขนัดเหมือนเมื่อเดือนก่อน ตอนที่ราคาทองขึ้นมาสูงครั้งแรก คนมาขายทองกันแน่นร้าน แต่ตอนนี้คนรอราคาทองให้พุ่งกระฉูดแล้วค่อยมาทำกำไรต่อไป

เราเสียดายที่ตึกเก่าๆที่สร้างตั้งแต่สมัยรัชกาลที่5 ค่อยๆถูกรื้อไป ตึกใหม่ที่ไม่มีความเชื่อมโยงกับประวัติศาสตร์ของถนนนี้ เริ่มเข้ามาแทนที่ของเก่า และเจ้าของตึกก็ไม่ค่อนเห็นความสำคัญของการอนุรักษ์ของเก่าไว้ให้คนรุ่นหลังได้ดู และเรียนรู้รากเหง้าของวัฒนธรรมของตนเอง ในหลวงรัชกาลที่5 ทรงมีความคิดกว้างไกล ได้สร้างถนนเยาวราชที่มีความกว้างมากแบบเวอร์ในสมัยนั้น ก็เหมือนกับถนนราชดำเนินนั่นเอง ตอนนี้ถนนสองสายนี้ดูแคบไปแล้ว และไม่มีทางขยายได้. พอเราเห็นตึกใหม่ที่ทึบเหมือนกำแพงเมืองจีน แล้วก็ได้แต่ถอนหายใจ ไม่รู้ว่าคนออกแบบตึกมาจากดาวอะไร เราก็หวังว่าความเปลี่ยนแปลงที่จะเกิดขึ้นต่อไป คงไม่ไปทำลายของเก่าที่มีคุณค่าทางวัฒนธรรม และประวัติศาสตร์ของบรรพบุรุษที่ได้ช่วยกันก่อสร้าง เมืองสยามให้เจริญมาได้ทุกวันนี้

The design of the new building above reminds me of the Great Wall in China! But the old buildings of over a hundred years old in yellow paint looks more harmonious, friendly and reflects the craftsmanship ship of past generation. We only recently have started to pass law on listed old buildings for preservation. I hope those remaining old buildings of cultural and architectural heritage will be preserved in time.
