1985 Ferrari 288 GTO
Today we're going to talk about the RM Sotheby's sale that will take place on February 2nd in Paris with in particular the second part of the sale of the Petitjean collection. Marcel Petitjean, former racing driver and car lover, collected cars in the 60s. This sale focuses on the 28 Ferraris he owned including a 275 GTB/4 and a this stunning 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO for about € 2,500,000.
Marcel Petitjean spent the last five decades amassing a car collection in order to build a museum. I don't know why the project didn't succeed. The first part of the collection, 96 cars, was sold in june 2020 with many iconic cars including DeLorean DMC-12, Lamborghini Miura, Porsche 911 Turbo and even Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster (more about the sale on businessinsider.com)... Impressive collection.
Here's a follow-up of my posts about the RM Sotheby's Arizona sale. The sale took place this weekend, waiting for the results to see if all these beauties found a buyer and at what price: :

History of Ferrari 288 GTO
As the sales for road cars were declining, Enzo Ferrari and his Chief Engineer, Nicola Materazzi, decided to re-engage Ferrari in motor racing. The Ferrari 288 GTO was the second Ferrari with GTO name (GT for Gran Turismo and O for Omologata, homologated in Italian) since the 250 GTO. Just for the pleasure, some pics about this car :

The Ferrari 288 GTO was built in order to compete in the famous FIA's Group B with the most powerful and fastest rally cars (Audi, Peugeot, and Lancia...). You needed a production of 200 cars for homologation in these races. But in 1987, the Group B was cancelled, the GTO never raced but Ferrari decided anyway to sell it to its customers.
For Nicola Materazzi, “this model truly meant the rebirth of the ‘real’ Ferrari”. I'm agree with him 😀
To built it quickly the first version was based on the 308 GTB penned by Pininfarina. But while the project was in progress, several improvements were made with a more aggressive look :
- a longer wheelbase ,
- the doors, trunk and engine-lid in lightweight aluminum,
- bigger wheels (8 inch wide at the front and 10 at the rear),
- larger spoilers,
- and three cooling slots in the rear wings (like the 250 GTO).
Specification
The Ferrari 288 GTO was equipped with a Tipo F114B mid-mounted V-8 engine producing 400 hp. The road-tests done by Road & Track (source : Wiki):
- 0–100 kmh in 5 seconds,
- 0-200 kmh in 16 seconds,
- with a top speed of 288kmh.
This example (chassis 55169) was bought by Bepp Mayer, German racing driver with many options (air conditioning, power windows and a radio). The car is finished Rosso Corsa over black leather interior. Classic but beautiful. The 288 GTO joined the Petitjean collection in 1998 with only 9559 km on the odometer.
Can you see yourself behind the wheel of this beautiful beast ?
Perfect for buying bread and croissants on Sunday morning 😀 For the next post, I'll quickly present the rest of Marcel Petitjean's Ferrari collection, 27 Ferrari.

My favorite Ferrari, although the Testarossa is a close second.
Beautiful car especially the front with this aggressive look. We can see that it is a sought-after and appreciated Ferrari considering the selling price.
