Peanut saga: almost a disaster and the prince of darkness makes an appearance

avatar

I booked Peanut for neutering and hernia repair surgery on Thursday and unluckily chose a day that coincided with a period of extreme cold because we are nearing midwinter here and a cold front arrived on Thursday morning. I really feel for him with his shaved belly.

Peanut has an umbilical hernia which is caused when the muscles that surround the opening for the umbilical cord, which supplies nutrients to the unborn kitten, do not close completely after birth. In extreme cases, the opening is large enough for a kitten's intestines to protrude through the opening and that could be life threatening. Peanut's opening is very small and seldom causes problems unless some abdominal fat is caught in the opening. Prevention is better than cure so hernias are normally repaired at the same time that a kitten is neutered or spayed.

After: a small incision with 3 stitches

He came home and all seemed well until this morning, when I woke up to find the Peanut had succeeded in pulling out 2 of the 3 stitches. Luckily, the wound did not open, even though it's only 2 days old. I panicked and called the vet. She reassured me that if the wound had not opened, it wasn't necessary to restitch it. Instead, Peanut earned himself the cone of shame....

cone.jpg

...a device universally despised by pets and he is no exception. I didn't put it on him in the beginning because none of my other spayed cats have pulled their stitches out and I know how much cats hate this device. It has him catching the rim on various surfaces and walking backwards. Sigh.... It's likely that the cold had a role in his stitch-removal antics but he is also just an antsy character. His vet thinks that 5 days will be sufficient. It's going to be a long 5 days.

Yoda has been hanging around the house down the street because he's annoyed with me for offending his dignity by making him take a pill everyday. The cold has brought him indoors and here he is hanging out in the spice cupboard. He's hoping to find catnip in there.

The white bottle in the front contains L-Tryptophan, a supplement I use to keep him more even-tempered although he'd prefer catnip

Aww poor Peanut! The cone is a pain in the buts and you can tell how they struggle with it. He will forget about it soon enough after it's gone.

Yoda rocks! As always :)

Yoda is the dude :)
I'm surprised Peanut is actually adapting to the cone and living with it

I remember when Suzi had the cone. She was so clumsy and bumping against everything the first day. Then she was handling it well.. just looked so sad and miserable.

:>) As always @nikv ...I enjoyed this post about Peanut and your other feline friends.

My newest arrival 'Greystone' is seemingly doing well, coming and going at will and has healed fully from the BB gun wound to his face.

I think he has a brother who sneaks in to eat as well (it looks almost like him) but the other guy runs from me when he sees me coming.

Uhhhg... The Cone!

We just hope Lil' Guy makes it home ALIVE & HEALING.

He is now by 4X and counting, our most expensive rescue.

I also hope he comes back with the same crazy personality that has been such a challenge for us. (and his adopted siblings)

As you know I am sure...

These medical or near death events, can change them.

I updated the Lil' Guy Down 911 post. And will update again this evening.

Luv ya Catlady, Purrs and Hed (cone) Bonks for Peanut...!

Peanut being the weirdo that he is, has adjusted totally to the cone and doesn't really care about it , which is great. I have other drama going on with another cat too so I feel your pain. What's happening: all is too quiet?

I forgot to update last night. Here is what I added to the post about Lil' Guys condition. Still fever of unknown origin as of now. I still fear it may be broken glass.

Update: As of Monday afternoon, Lil' Guys temp is down to 102.4°

He will spend monday night also at the vets.

I will update this Tuesday. Hopefully He will feel better and be coming home?

Ok, good. Personally, I doubt it's the glass. I've had cats get like that too. Hope you get him back soon

Thanks Catlady!

We are gonna love him a bunch more after this. Not just cuz he is our most expensive rescue by 6X any other.

We really miss him!

Fever of Unknown Origin seems to be quiye a common thing on this side of the planet.

It bothers me not to know, He is quarantined to the master bath.

The vet and technicians all commented on what a lover boy he is... LoL

Yoda and Katia have both had episodes of those also. Luckily I managed both of those at home although I had to give Yoda fluids a couple of times. After having a cat with kidney failure, at least I can do that kind of thing at home

Another update @nikv

Just got this photo. He ate a little, first time since saturday morning, and pooped this out.

I hope your cat's better off. Does the catnip work? My cats don't even pay attention to it, I have it because when it blooms the flies go to the neighbor's house jiijijij

It's true that catnip doesn't work for all cats although mine love it. At least you have some use for it :)

There is poor Peanut I hope he is already recovering. I always wanted to know what they used that kind of satellite for animals for.

Haha Yoda looks to be king of the cupboard. My cats love the catnip too. I have a plant of it outside and break a leave off for them to eat quite often.

I’m glad Peanut is on the way to recovery even if he has to wear the cone for awhile.

Yoda is the king in general :) You are lucky if your cats don't trash your catnip. If they like it, usually the only way to grow it is in hanging baskets
Fortunately, Peanut is a resilient little chap

Both the cats stay inside. I don’t see many stray cats here but one might come by for a taste of the catnip.

So far so good.🤞

I've been out of the loop again. Too many things going on. I start a post on copper minerals but didn't have time to finish it before it expired. So I'll have to redo it. Had a free moment to peruse your site and had to comment on peanut. He's getting to be a handsome cat. Glad things didn't take a turn for the worst. Our newest kitten Siamese hybrid, Tips is growing to be a monster at over 13 lbs. None of our other cats come close to his size.
