Science and Bible agree on end of the world
Some of us might think there are no meeting points between Science and Bible. The fact is that there are many instances, and one of the crucial issues is the one we want to look into.
- Exact time (day) of the end.
Modern science agrees the world, our world would someday cease to be habitable due to what is happening in the sun, our sun. Science has established that the energies of heat and light coming from the sun are a consequence of the nuclear fusion of hydrogen to form helium.
It says the hydrogen store of the sun will eventually run out in about 5 billion years to come. That is a calculated guess which implies the exact time is not certain.
Now, the Bible in Matthew 24:36 states, "But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father(God) only."
The disciples of Jesus had wanted to know from him when the end of the world would be. His answer as quoted above shows only God knows. This means we can only guess as Science has done.
- Transformation of the sun.
Science logically agrees the sun will no more be able to produce energy by nuclear fusion when its hydrogen content is exhausted rather, it will for a long while contain tremendous amount of stored heat. It will then expand to form a red giant - expanding even to Mars, engulfing our planet in the process.
On its own, the Bible states in Mark 13:24, "But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light."
There is no doubt that what Science sees as "red giant" sun is what the Bible refers to as a darkened sun. The word, "red" or "dark" is not very important, rather, a change in colour. After all, it could be dark red. Besides, distance can affect colour perception.
And the Bible went further to say, "...the moon shall not give her light." This is understandable because the moon derives its light from the sun, and when the sun has exhausted its hydrogen store, it is natural that it will finally fail to supply light to the moon.
- Scorched earth.
Modern science observes that in the dramatic event of the "red giant" formation, the increased brightness and unbearable heat produced will cause death to living things since our rivers, lakes and oceans will even evaporate.
Now, the Bible states in 2Peter 3:10, "But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up."
We see that the runaway heat produced by the "red giant" or "darkened sun" will even melt materials(elements) of the earth as the Bible further highlighted.
It is interesting to see that the Bible (written many years ago) and Science are saying the same thing about the end of the world.
By the way, did you notice that all the verses quoted from the Bible on this matter started with the word, "But"? It is as if the Bible knew in advance that there is going to be a dialogue between itself and someone in time to come. And that someone now appears to be modern science.
