"CARING IS WALKING IN ANOTHER'S SHOE"

Do you really mean it when you say to someone, "I care about you"? Sorry for enquiring but I suppose we must understand what we say before we say them, so we could practice what we preach. Our words are supposed to be our bond. Hence, we ought to mean what we say.

If I say I care about you, I am submitting myself to a monumental responsibility. It means that I am just not interested in you, but committed to you.

Interest is tied to convenience but commitment is result oriented, so is caring. If I care for the sick, it is to aid the sick get better, If I care for my environment, I want it to be more hygienic and clean. So, what is caring?

Paraphrasing the definition of care from the Oxford advanced Learners Dictionary (6th Edition), I understand caring to mean, providing for someone or somethings welfare or to be responsible for the welfare of something or someone. I guess the later expression gives a more succinct view of the act of caring.

Caring is responsibility. When you care for someone, you deliberately walk in the persons shoes, striving to feel his wants and pre-empting his needs. This self-less act can be perfectly illustrated by a mother-child relationship. From this example we can outline the indices with which to judge whether or not someone is caring.

. A COMPASSIONATE HEART: A mother is compassionate about her child and desires her child to be comfortable even at her own expense.

. A VIGILANT EYE: A mother is prompt at nothing the signs of any need associated with her child and sometimes pre-empts the need before it arises thereby making the supply await the demand.

. A DILIGENT HAND: A mother is not slothful concerning the affairs of her child. She can work her fingernails out round the clock to cushion her child's uneasiness.

In a nutshell, a caring person has a compassionate heart, vigilant eye and a diligent hand.

Remember these qualities the next you feel the urge to tell someone, "I care about you".
