My Thoughts and Ramblings on TV and Movies

avatar

Seeing as I'm free for an hour I thought I'd give a bash at writing in our Cine tribe. After all, I'm part of the team -- why not, huh? Can't just sit there and not participate. What sort of leader would I be then, huh? Yep, precisely. So let's get going with this.

I connect deeply with movies and TV

I'm a bit saddened by these last four years. Maybe it's through my internal growth, and also my innate ability to know body language and better spot bad acting, but I feel as of late there have been few big screen titles I have been able to connect with on a deep level.

I always love it when a movie (or a TV series) can take me on a literal emotional rollercoaster. There are quite a few titles that have done this to me in the last ten years. Two of notable substance that I can recollect easily and that would be The Last Kingdom and Outlander. Okay, call me a sucker for period dramas but these seem to be the ones that really take me out to dry.

There's a real splash of raw emotion mixed with outdated problems that can really tug on those heart strings. One part such notably when they were calling the lead actress in Outlander a witch for being able to heal their sick in methods they didn't quite understand yet -- of course she was from the future. They had touched on a lot of practices (and malpractices) that were carried out in the 1700's that would seem absolutely barbaric in today's world.

Poldark is an honorary mention, as series that I absolutely loved, and was really saddened that they didn't continue the adventure further

I watch TV and Movies because it's an escape. I can imagine myself as someone else for an hour and be transported into a world that I haven't experienced yet. Maybe that's me though, I don't know. Anyone else feel the same?

Is it me or are movies watered down these days?

I try to avoid defaulting to my Political leanings when asking questions such as this. Literally all of my favourite sci-fi movies and TV have been absolutely obliterated by poor screenwriting and crammed in propaganda.

Doctor Who for instance was a quirky enigmatic entity that travelled the universe trying to save races from lurking evil. Asking questions about the universe that perhaps audiences have yet to find answer in, or even start to question themselves. It is now a poorly written series that moral grandstands to it's audience on race and gender, oh, and maybe a little sci fi in there perhaps!

And what's worse when these movies and TV shows are criticised by their audience for being terrible, or straying from the original message, then the cast often double down and state that of course it's the audience that is racist and misogynist. Sidestepping any point that many female and non-white actors that have starred in mega-blockbusters for over the past 30 years.

But I feel this might just be my biased opinion. Sometimes our biases tend to lock us into a little bubble that finds out opinions that mirror our own and doesn't seek to question the objective truth. It is easier to feel nice and comfortable than to feel uneasy and uncomfortable.

So I ask you, is it only me that feels this way? Am I the only one that feels movies and TV are limited by poor writing and bad acting? Not so much bad acting per-se, but harder to seem realistic, like a world that I can transport myself into.

Hollywood is collapsing

Like @ecoinstant said in his discussion post. I feel Hollywood is dying. What was once a place for geniuses to create freeform art and thrust it onto the world for audiences to decide -- is now a place bogged down with tight social rules and things you can and cannot say. I read somewhere that movies now have strict guidelines on what they can and cannot do with female characters. One being that females are not allowed to be shown to be overpowered by a man because it might send out negative social indicators to their audience. Whether that's true or not is anyone's guess, but this isn't art.

I'm not a fan of limitations on any art, however uncomfortable it may seem. Life isn't pretty. Life is messy, uncomfortable, and sometimes downright cruel. A lot of us really connect with that. I know I do

Part of what I've detailed is why CineTV was born

Of course and it's a real fun tribe to have, and speak about. @taskmaster4450 and myself spent a day going back and forth over what tribe we should build. His initial idea was cats, because everyone loves cats! Part of why YouTube got so popular was those cat videos, but we came to the conclusion there was only so many things we can do with cats -- but not with movies and TV. So much we can do!

My first thoughts were the disparity over on https://rottentomatoes.com where we have "Official Critics" where whenever we come across a film that challenges the popular narrative (which is very rare) then we see a massive gap between audience ratings and the "official ratings." I've never liked this because it presents the idea that the audience is wrong, but in business, the audience is never wrong. No matter how much your ego prevents you from listening to them

This is why part of CineTV in the future will hopefully challenge this. I want to have a place where the audience of a film can feel free to review their films without any "official people" doing so. After all, an opinion is just that -- an opinion. No more valid from an official person than an unofficial person.

Expect the narratives to be challenged.

I prefer art of all forms. That's we created cine. I am really bored with censorship and narrative controlling. The internet was invented for people to express their thoughts and not have big government come bearing down on us.

For now we are a normal tribe with normal parameters with a normal front end but expect that to change and grow. Think of how we can grow and become something more, something better -- something impactful.

The first thing I'll be looking to do is make it easier for regular people to sign up and use us. That has to be the very first step that we concentrate on and I'm working my way towards it, albeit slowly. Finding a reliable front end developer is like a needle in a haystack. But we will get there!

As ecoinstat had stated, hollywood dying is true. Well the hollywood cinema is dying, but it still is a booming industry as it is now a well established mecca of content creators of evrytype, like influnecer to yotubers and what not. But cinema as art still has miles to go! What is needed is a few capable hands.

Think of how we can grow and become something more, something better -- something impactful.

The potential is limitless. If we do it right, i can picture even great film makers rising up from our tiny tribe in near future. Till then, fingers crossed.

Im glad I am not alone feeling this. It's not us, I think the movies are meant to be shallow - and decrease IQ these days lol. I find myself constantly disappointed with Netflix these days. I think I am just going to unsubscribe and revert to reading books (didn't mean to sound virtuous lol). I can just channel my disappointment into reading my still unread books.

@diabolika! Nice to see you on my feed again. I am sometimes graced by your presence from time to time. Are you still world travelling?

I feel @cineman's thoughts though. There is an underbelly of fresh new talent that aren't getting a look in right now. It'll be nice to see what happens in the next few years as a power vacuum is created :)

You're not alone, Raymond. This whole political correctness thingy irritates me severely. Sometimes I refuse to watch these stuff doctored with the intention to please the crowd. These are mere propaganda, not art.

It's hard to watch. Sadly my go-to genre has been obliterated by this propaganda bollocks. I guess they attacked sci fi because they have some of the most dedicated fans.

It really isnt you. There is a lot of crap movies and shows out there. That is why the best thing to do is to turn away.

I am not a super hero genre fan too much but in reading some of the posts about that, they obliterated those films. It is best if people not go to see them.

Sadly, the viewing public keeps turning out. I dont watch box office draws (well pre COVID since there really arent any these days. But the way to hurt them it to stop watching.

Thus I prefer to watch older films and stay away from the newer stuff. Show me a film to entertain me, not lecture me.

You know, "The Boys" on Amazon Prime, which is a Superhero Series is actually pretty good! And pokes a lot of fun at our western propaganda. I'd recommend it. One of the only Superhero Series I'd bother to watch these days.

crammed in propaganda

This right here is getting so bad with anything created in the last 5 years but the last 2 are even worst, You can't watch one show without some political problem shoved in it.

Oh two years has been the worst. I hate that whenever I see a woman in a role now that I question the validity of her being there as an actor. I hate that feeling, and it is not the way I used to watch movies. That did not even cross my mind.

right, We watch Grey's anatomy and that show this year has used every political thing that happens in 2020, Black Lives Matter, Covid, Trans, Women's Rights, likely more. Kinda a downer now

No You are not alone, there might be 99 movies which runs only on propaganda but still you would find 1 movie which is trying to show the real truth without any coverups. Don't loose Hope 😉
I would suggest you watch TOILET - Ek Prem Katha if you found with subtitles!! This is a Bollywood movie on True Story. A class of Indians don't use to build Toilets in their houses because of their own reasons . You should watch this!!!

Very interesting post, but I must add that the disconnect between "official critics" and the audience is nothing new. Actually, this is the phenomenon that existed from the very beginnings of film industry. When films actually started to be made and shown in 1890s, they were greeted by nothing short of utter disdain by prominent writers, actors, critics and other members of cultural establishment, being discarded as "cheap worthless gimmick" or "succumbing to lowest common denominator" i.e. stupid plebeian masses who couldn't understand True Art. Such attitudes began to change only in 1920s when Russian Bolsheviks showed how to successfully use new medium for propaganda purposes and, later, with an arrival of sound film technology which allowed films to resemble traditional stage plays.

The disconnect continued in later years. For example, Hitchcock is nowadays celebrated as one of the greatest film maker who ever lived, but until 1960s he was seen merely as a craftsman who delivers solid genre entertainment. And Hitchcock himself believed so. It was only after being hailed by Truffaut and other French New Wave critics in 1960s that he was recognised as a real artist. Sadly, Hitchock himself was talked into believing in his own artistic infallibility, which reflected in his later films being visibly inferiort to his classic work.

I think it's worse now though. Never before have I seen an audience and critic score so far apart from each other

I'm excited about where this tribe is going. I'm a big fan of movies--popular ones, obscure ones, critically acclaimed ones, and even the stupid ones (Kung Pow! Enter the Fist, anyone?). So, this looks like a community I can enjoy myself in.

Literally all of my favourite sci-fi movies and TV have been absolutely obliterated by poor screenwriting and crammed in propaganda.

I have to agree with this. I hate it when "remakes" and "reboots" take something you love and twist it into something else. Don't get me wrong, I agree with issues regarding social justice--it's a common good and there's nothing wrong to work towards it. However, there's a difference between fighting for social justice using your original work versus taking something that a lot of people love and using it against them.

Yup! And it's not as if a lot of the sci fi movies and shows didn't tackle these issues in the first place. Star Trek was always challenging ethical and moral standpoints - just not in an overtly condescending way as it does now.

So true about Star Trek. I’m a fan of the 90’s tv shows and they managed to talk about everything from war to social classes to religion and still keep it about science fiction.

we live in the era of political correctness something that we are all affected by either we know it or not. The movie/series industry is one of those industries that felt this deeply. It's not that they are the victims there because a lot of them in order to please that % of people who i believe is extremely tiny and in order to make some money they will do everything.

Because of that, they have destroyed many popular titles like doctor who that you mentioned, ghostbusters, troy with black achilles, iron fist. I continue with this all day long but that won't change anything i guess. I would propose that if they need movies and "heroes" with these aspirations, sexuality, gender or whatever they can simply create an original story and not trying to force it into movies and heroes that exist since our childhood.

For me Hollywood will stay but will change given the circumstances. For example, i may not see that many good films but i do see many good series in which many Hollywood actors are playing in :P So it will just change form i think.

One of the reasons i like this tribe is that it can be completely free. For example, one of my long dreams would have been to create my own film, series, sort film, a dream a had years ago when i was writing those reviews but ofc i didn't have the knowledge to do it, only the ideas :P. Thus, if that is somehow achieved we can be away of the Sjw crap, over political correctness and Hollywood branch that is after money!
