My Kung Fu is better than yours

When I was younger, this TV show was on called Kung Fu: The Legend Continues. I thought it was pretty awesome though short-lived and I watched it pretty religiously. My dad probably thought it was pretty amusing because he eventually had to explain to me that it was based off of a television series from before my (1972) time called Kung Fu.

In fact, I think they used a bit of old footage from the original series for certain scenes in Kung Fu: The Legend Continues. As I grew older and had my own money to spend I picked up Kung Fu the original series on DVD and started watching it. One of the things I loved about the show was David Carradine.

Carradine had this awesome way of playing the main character Cain. He was very deliberate with his words and motions. It was pretty cool to see. He even had a totally different way of doing Kung Fu than I was familiar with at that point. It was slow and fluid, there was a grace to it that was pretty awesome.

Looking back now, it is possible they just slowed all of those scenes down so it looked cooler, but I still think it was more composed than some of the flying fist Jet Li stuff you see these days.

Here are a couple clips from the two shows that I found on YouTube.

Anyway, I just saw recently that they are rebooting the series on the CW. Since it is the CW, I think we can all agree that it is going to be mostly targeted to the teen audience. I don't even mind that they decided to cast a female character in the lead role this time. I actually think that is pretty cool.

My biggest concern with the show was that they would change the style of Kung Fu and instead of the slow precise motions switch to the fast and furious style that seems to keep people engaged these days.

After watching the trailer for the new show on IMDB it appears that they are indeed moving to the more modern rendition of Kung Fu since apparently no one has the attention span these days to watch the more fluid style.

Just a disclaimer, I am not an expert in any martial arts, so feel free to correct me if I don't know what I am talking about here.

I will likely still watch the show, but I don't think I am as excited about it as I previously was. I do hope it does well. We need some more strong female leads on TV.

What about you? Are you going to tune in for Kung Fu?

My nephew practices Kung Fu is a very elegant martial art, it requires precise, fast and strong movements, there is also the variety of slow movements without force that is more to let the energy flow.
For sure my nephew will watch the series

Oh man, classic show. As a kid I would fall asleep to Kung Fu every night, those clips brought back some memories. I can't imagine that first clip being shown today, the SJW's would go absolutely bonkers.

Yeah, for sure. I am thinking I might start a short series on different shows from when I was a kid.

I used to watch the Carradine show back in the 70s. With the limited channels we had it was pretty exotic stuff. There were Bruce Lee movies in the cinema, but I was too young for those.

A lot of those old shows seem so slow compared with modern stuff. Minutes could go by with not much happening, but now they are worried you will switch channels. Back then we didn't even have a remote control :)

That is a good point about the speed of shows between then and now. Much more dialog I feel like. It wasn't necessarily a bad thing. I think I am going to start a little series on old shows that I loved when I was a kid.

Some get repeated here on the many channels we have now and the difference is really noticeable.

nostalgia ;)

I remember that show .

It was interesting how every show had the life lesson from the old master.

Then me and my friends would go out in the yard and see who had the better kung-fu.

We got pretty good at the leg sweep - one or two broken tail bones LOL

Haha, that is pretty funny. Yes, everything was tied up with a nugget of wisdom and a nice little bow at the end back then!

I never seen the old kung fu shows with David in them just clips from youtube. But I too grew up watching the (legend continues series).David and Chris Potter had good chemistry in it.For those who watched Lone Wolf McQuade they would recognize David from the last few scenes where David and Chuck face off in the ring. Both Daivd and Chunk have different styles of Kung Fu. As far as the new series of Kung fu with the female lead Nicky Chen.My wife and I have followed this series and found it entertaining also suspenseful.I look forward to see your posts on shows you grew up watching.

The best part of the first clip was the signage for the "Tonsorial Parlour" - great set up 🙂.

I remember the original Kung Fu and I think I might watch that, if I can find it somewhere. Last night a clip came up from Justified (I loved the original book) and I could feel myself being hooked into watching all the series 😂.

The Carradine brothers were interesting, my favourite with them was another Western, The Long Riders which had several sets of real life actor brothers as I remember. I watched it on a little black and white portable TV I had at the time, and the monochrome and sharpness of the image brought something extra to it.

Justified was pretty awesome. I haven't read any of the books, but I have wanted to start them. Looking at the breadth of work that Elmore Leonard has done, you can't really go wrong. I heard they are bringing Timothy Olyphant back for another Raylen Givens series. I will definitely be watching!

This was one of my favorites. I was always fascinated by the opening scene where he walked through all the snakes. The power of the mind is an incredible thing if we learn how to use it.
