CINE Tribe DISCUSSION CONTEST - 'WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF FILM?'

avatar

Hello CINE tribe! Let's continue to explore the limits of discussion on this new tribe by opening up a CONTEST!

There is real money on the LINE, and I am putting up a 200 DHEDGE prize pool for, to be distributed at my sole discretion, plus CINE votes, and @raymondspeaks has offered to match as well! THATS 400 DHEDGE worth of cash and prizes!

CINE TRIBE DISCUSSION CONTEST

image.png
Source

As this is a discussion contest, I will be engaging in a discussion in the comments with all participants.

STEP 1 - Answer Discussion Question

The discussion question for you to answer in the comments is -

'WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF FILM?'

Right now the film industry seems pretty dead. Hollywood has lost all credibility, almost all of its mystique, and possibly all of its money. But, we still love movies! What is next for this great industry, is it more television? Sure studios like Netflix and Amazon seem to be the future, but they aren't even profitable at making content, they are just shoving profits from different businesses into content creation.

So much is uncertain for film, how do you see the future?

STEP 2 - Reply to someone else answer.

Use constructive dialogue, ask questions, compare their answer to your answer. Be respectful.

STEP 3 - Reply to replies and repeat step 2

This is easy enough! The winners will be determined by me not based on how many comments were written, but the general quality of engagement perceived. I would like to set up a regular contest like this, so winners in this contest may be invited to be judges and moderators in ongoing discussions we will be hosting on CINETV.io

What is DHEDGE?

image.png

DHEDGE is a discord based token hedge fund, run with loving automation by @taskmanager. The account is @discohedge, and this is the best post I know about it. If you hold more than 10, it pays out 'drips' each day.

Let's see how much discussion we can get into in the next 10 days - FINAL DEADLINE
MONDAY April 5th around lunchtime.

Freedom and Friendship!

What a great idea, This tribe is going to become one of the most engaging tribes.

On to the question, What is the state of films. Well, I am thinking we may as you said see the end of Hollywood( Not a bad thing) and maybe we are about to see the start of more independent films, The money is still there in the industry and people have shown they will spend to see a great film.

I think TV is going to end it has been slowly dying for many years but TV shows will be around and see to be more popular due to Netflix and prime picking up so many more shows than TV ever did.

So many possibilities with the industry, But one thing for sure even when Hollywood crashes films and shows will be around after.

Curious what others have to say.

maybe we are about to see the start of more independent films

Yes, I have seen several low budget suspense/mystery films in the past weeks like The Block Island Sound and Come True, and they were great. Not sure if they were independent but they were clearly low budget.

I agree that tv networks are on their way out. But they probably won't disappear completely, they could just merge with streaming and become a tv/streaming hybrid. Like with ABC/Disney+, HBO/Warner Brothers/HBOMax, and CBS/CBS All Access.

In fact, as far as streaming wars go, Netflix, despite its current dominance could be in trouble. They are on top right now, but they don't own IP the same way that Disney and Warner Brothers do. As much as I love their original shows, they don't have a lot of them. And they are in danger of losing acquired shows over the next several years to competitors, too.

Yeah, that is true, I think disney+ will take on most of the world media they now own.

Yeah, I think Netflix needs to try and get a sports / Live program to compete more with them. I was watching the blockbuster documentary and they said if it wasn't for the 2008 crisis it would have likely been blockbuster and not Netflix.

I haven't seen that documentary, but I did see somewhere that before Netflix blew up, the owners tried to sell their company to Blockbuster, but Blockbuster declined. It's crazy how these things end up.

Agree!! We are already in an era of Smart TV and There is already a huge demand of it, where Asia Pacific is the biggest market. It is projected to grow with a CAGR of 16.52%

I think TV would evolve into a Home Cinema Theatre kind of experience, where there is no need to go to Multiplex to watch movies.

I hope we will see more independent films, but the series is also a very popular format! I think channels will die tho, as they should, which means networks have to reorganize or mutate or something!

Channels will have to move to streaming or be taken out. I would love to see some independent TV, But that would likely be to costly for most

That would be more interesting, I think the digital way will need to be like this.
I never thought of this till now but this might actually be the TRUE use case NFT's.

This reminds me of Wu Tang Clan's Once Upon A Time in Shaolin album in 2015. It's a little like NFT (minus the technology) since there was only one copy sold. The creators also placed restrictions on how the album cannot be played in public or used commercially until the year 2103. So, for 88 years the buyer can only play it at private parties or listen to it at home, etc.

i think tv networks are going to be bought or merged with streaming services like Neflix, Amazon etc etc

I'm with you there. Streaming has been great this last year, but I can't wait to get back to the theaters. I feel a little weird sometimes when I'm watching something and there's no one to share my enthusiasm with in the moment.

Just a few weeks ago, for example, I was watching the Wandavision finale and I missed hearing the collective gasp you get in theaters when something incredible happens like when Wanda became the Scarlet Witch, for the first time. It felt like something was missing. Now that I've written that down, I realized this could explain my recent interest in watching YouTube reaction videos. Lol!

are humans evolving to sharing culture through 'reaction videos'?

I too am eager to get back to theaters! Its a different experience completely.

0

avatar

There could be a sharing element to it. For me, it's just nice to see how others view the movies that I liked growing up. It's interesting, because most of the videos I've seen are 'first time reactions', which are usually done with little to no context from the reactor. So as a viewer it gives me a chance to see a different perspective.

I believe that even though Hollywood as such will be a thing of the past soon, there is still an ever growing demand for films. We've seen the rise of streaming videos, and new concepts like binge watching make series more popular than ever. In my opinion this same trend is going to continue in the direction of YouTube - or even better, decentralized equivalents like 3Speak / DTube, etc. There's no reason they can't be well written with good production value, attracting a wide audience, without the restrictions of centralized media. In fact, I believe there will be such a wide choice of shows that it will be literally overwhelming.

0

I agree, I think we are about to see a massive explosion in independent films that are on par or even rock what Hollywood has been remaking over the last 30 years. Hollywood is dead and we are about to finally or at least I hope some new writers that don't wanna remake the same movie

The scenario for independent movies is increasingly broad and the market is following this closely (mainly with co-productions between / among different countries... which is a very useful strategy to add even more strength to this movie genre).

I've enjoyed the rise of Netflix productions elsewhere. For instance Narcos introduced me to a whole range of other films I would have never considered watching beforehand.

I agree. Regardless of what happens to Hollywood, whether it dies out or changes shape, people still want to watch films. I'm pretty sure most moviegoers don't even care how a film is made as long as it is entertaining.

I like the idea of decentralized filmmaking. And it's not unthinkable, either especially with crowdfunded films already getting made. So far, there isn't much success there, yet, but it's still early days. All it takes is one success for decentralized films to gain traction.

I like that idea also. It would also take a little power away from the megacorps that are just too frightened to do anything a little too out there.

Television is not going to die any soon, as there are still so many developing countries where T.V is the only way of entertainment. Yes in Developed Countries and in countries where Internet reach is high, In those countries OTT Platforms will rock. By just analysing trends in different countries we can say that the Film Industry like "Hollywood" might die but the craze of watching Films would never die. The collapse of big Film Industries like Hollywood or Bollywood is the only way for Independent Creators to showcase their talent but they do need a Platform where they could get their viewers and yes Platforms like Youtube is already helping them but the problem with Youtube is that it's too broad for Film Industry. CINETV Tribe is also a hope for Independent Creators as it's very niche-oriented. I don't know about the future plans of CINETV but I Hope it would work for those Independent Creators to Rise and Shine.

I work in the European film industry, and what you say about TV is true. Most productions I work on are for The Austrian or German Tv stations. I do not see Bollywood going anywhere or collapsing. It is a huge industry I have been working for them in Austria and they spend a crazy amount of money, but investing in a Bollywood movie could give your investment a 10fold boost. The numbers are gigantic.
Of course Austrian TV does not have that much money but they still spend a decent amount on their own productions. It is very hard for independent film makers like me to get into the cycle of people who count, you will see a PA rise and shine to becoming a second AD because their best friend is the daughter of the director. And you will see talented people just struggle with stepping up the ladder. You certainly have to have a who if not me style of ego to win in this game... its of course much harder for women but I really see a positive change especially in gender ratio of the crew.

True, Nepotism is killing the talents and it's not new, They are making money and investing it in their kids and friends. Very rare Production houses are actually showcasing any New Talent. I wish these big production houses collapse soon so that New and Genuine Talents get their way to showcase their Talent.

Here in Canada or it seems is more and more of the TV shows are getting picked up by apple, prime, Netflix and we are seeing less and less every year on the cable market.

I met a filmmaker camping last summer who works for production for apple and he said due to covid he saw a massive decline in cable offerings. I do have to say tho Canada never really had much of a film industry as most went off to Hollywood

Television is not going to die any soon...

The future of film is the broadening of usecases of the original genre. Movies will be more interactive with the audience having a bigger influence on the outcomes of a scene like in Bandersnatch (Netflix)
Now imagine this experience boosted with artificial intelligence changing the surroundings and settings based on a real time voting mechanism so the scenes can be edited in real time changing all aspects the audience voted on.

Thats how I imagine it, how it is going to be? Stays an open question. I know that I love making movies so I will have to fight for my industry to stay alive somehow...

And after all, in this kind of interaction, it is several times easier to influence a person's opinion.

You might be right, but not every movies purpose is to change opinions. Entertainment should be a priority, in a world that is going to be so hostile environmentally that it is safer to stay inside, these new realities will open up humans imagination and keep them cheerful.

I think there are key technologies that could be important for the film industry in the coming years.

Photorealistic artificially generated virtual humans. Maybe in the future, some AI could be a better actor/actress than real humans, and probably cheaper to use as well. They could be introduced as CGI and eventually, as Elon Musk has said, the difference between real actors and anything virtually created will be zero. He said this when talking about videogames and the simulation theory, but the same technology improvements could apply to the film industry I believe.

Stories filmed in 360 degrees to be enjoyed using virtual reality helmets. Maybe in some cases moving the head around could be considered as too much effort when it comes to enjoying films, but the option of being able to watch every angle of everything that happens in one scene, instead of just what the screen shows could make things even better. Imagine a battle and being able to watch all of it in 360 degrees, it could be fun I think.

Interactive stories where the viewer can explore different potential plot paths. Black Mirror has a special interactive episode called Bandersnatch. In some key moments throughout the episode, the viewer is given several options to choose from, and then the main character follows that option. The combination of choices opens up different branches of the story and results in different endings. Creating an interactive film requires much more work, but could also be much more enjoyable for the viewer because exploring the choices and its consequences is fun.

0
0
0.000
avatar

This is very interesting! I think the 360 degree angle, if properly implemented, could add to rewatch-ability of the media, as with the multiple endings.

The computers are really expensive I heard too, the rendering of some of these Avatar-like movies takes dozens of hours per second.

In Venezuela there is a phrase that says:

100% agree with what you have said. even my opinion that I published before reading the comments includes virtual reality.

These are the key technologies to empower everyone to tell a story. Imagine paying a monthly sub like on Adobe CC but you have a complete holiday studio in the software. You just tell the AI whats happening and who is talking to whom, and the rest is magic. Combine that with NFTs to unlock famous actors of the past to play in your personal movie.

Future can be seen as two broad categories:

1. Short Term
2. Long Term

In short term the answer is NO a big no, films Industries like Hollywood are not going anywhere, Watching Movies in Theaters is one of the best way for entertainment in many developing countries and its just the few developed countries that have that much of internet reach to completely switch to OTT platforms which largely supports series over films.
However, maximum countries still don’t have that much internet facilities to entertain themselves through binge watching on those platforms. Their dependence for entertainment is still Television and as long as television is there films would be going good.

BUT, surely one day (in long term perspective) television will be a thing of past, when maximum of our world will be having internet access and will not be depending on TV for entertainment purposes. NO Hollywood NO Bollywood will exist and they shouldn’t be with all dirt they have been splattering throughout these years.

Concluding it, need of the moment is a platform that gives space to showcase the talents of the creators fairly.

0

Yes Absolutely Correct.
We can do our analysis comparing the behavioral patterns of Consumers in Developed and Developing Countries. In a bigger picture both are moving in same direction with same trendline.

The future ...
My 6-year-old son's phone is more powerful than my computer 20 years ago.
I can see in action how computer graphics work now.
I see tools for creating scenes.
And everyone around us understands that most of the special effects are computer graphics.
I'll see new comedies with Charlie Chaplin - I'm 100% sure.
Whether the films will be interactive - yes, of course they will. People are always ready to plunge into dreams. And they are always ready to pay money for dreams.

Live cinema is digging its own grave.
First, the actress goes to bed with the director to get into the film.
After 20 years, she says that she was forced.
The same nonsense happens to the actors. Everyone is suddenly fighting for skin color, for sexual orientation, for anything and it doesn't matter whether it is a crime or not, the career of an actor - director - screenwriter is DESTROYED.

So unfortunately, live cinema is dying ...
Is it good or bad we will find out later ...

I like what @solymi and @dedicatedguy both said about interactive TV, specifically mentioning Black Mirrors Bandersnatch. What if someone were to do something along those lines with say 500 different endings (short ones mind you) to wrap up your choices along the way and the specific ending you receive is block chain tied to an NFT. Its your ending. You own it. You could trade it with friends for their endings or sell it to someone that's trying to get all 500 endings for that episode or whatever. NBA Top Shot but with TV/Film/Short Form storytelling?

Interesting idea! I think someone would have to do it just so I would be able to wrap my head around it 🤣

Perhaps it could print the NFT when you get to the actual ending, leaving you with a 'ticket' of your experience!

0
0
0.000
avatar

That could be cool. And it wouldn’t need to be 500 different endings like I originally said more like 10 but with varying degrees of rarity/mintage. 1/100, 1/500, 1/1000 etc.

I had a discussion with a local comic book guy yesterday to the same affect. We already offer art pieces as NFTs with varying exclusivity. How long before Marvel and DC start offering on onchain digital exclusives.

0

You can also sell NFTs like movie tickets and some get the golden ticket where the ending is very special others get a semi rare ending with the silver ticket. After you watched the movie you can pass the nft on so someone else can watch you either do that for money or you give it away with a fee paid to the creators though.

So my opinion on the matter is that the film industry will be forever here but it will change shape just the same way everything else does. Hollywood in a way may be "dead" but the reality is a little bit different. Although less people pay attention to the awards and such , when we say hollywood we immediately think of "older actors". There is a whole generation with "new" actors that are part of Hollywood.

Also, i see that the film industry in general faces big difficulties. Most of the genres no matter the actor. At the same time there is a huge rise on tv shows and those people know it too. That's why you see so many damn series in so many different cable tv channels and companies like neftlix, hbo, apple, disney +, amazon etc etc. They all want a piece of the pie.

At the same time i see a swift these years on superhero movies/shows and anything related to books or real-life events. We tend to like these things for various reasons like our child heroes come to life etc etc. There is also a massive turn especially on Netflix for example for sjw content which try to appeal to tiny percentage but it fails miserably if you see the reviews and ratings. I don't know if this going to continue because they actually lose big money with this method and they know it.

All in all i believe for a certain while we gonna keep on watching new superhero movies/show and series/shows from popular books like for example the many marvel,dc,star wars series and ofc the lord of the rings one!

0

... the film industry will be forever here but it will change shape just the same way everything else does.

Yeah! Straight to the point.

The essence of Cinema is absurdly strong for one day to come to an end and / or be forgotten. However, in order to remain relevant, it will have to adapt to the new developments that emerge over time (as it has always done, does and will continue to do).

I don't think Hollywood is going to end, nor that its future is bleak. Odds are it will just evolve into something different. After all, even though Hollywood is "pretty dead" right now, that's more because of the pandemic and government-imposed restrictions and not because moviegoers are tired of going to the movies. Personally, I'm eager to go back to the cinemas. A 2020 report on the entertainment industry, for example, shows that in 2019, all segments of entertainment--movies, tv, and streaming--all grew at impressive rates and that kids loved going to the movies.

With that said, I think Hollywood, or movie-making in general, is going to be firmly split into two camps with Studios and Big Blockbusters dominating theaters on one side and the Auteurs and Independent Films making inroads in streaming.

We saw a bit of this in 2019. That year, we had nine traditional blockbusters enter the billion-dollar club. Avengers: Endgame even making it to 2.7 billion. If look at these movies, with the exception of The Joker, most of them were studio-led. Not to say that this is a bad thing, most of these movies were entertaining and regardless of the quality, moviegoers went to the theaters for them. But they are not as groundbreaking, edgy, or thought-provoking as those where the director was the one with the final say.

In contrast, movies like Marriage Story and The Irishman, which were groundbreaking, edgy, and thought-provoking were technically streaming films and only released in theaters so that they could qualify for awards season.

So, post-pandemic we're probably going to see this trend continue. And I don't see anything wrong with that. There are movies that are more suited to viewing in theaters where we can get swept up with the excitement of the crowd, while others are better suited at home where we can contemplate our personal experience better.

Another possibility is that movie makers and movie goers will be more platform agnostic in the future. With today's tv shows being produced with the same scope and production values as movies shown in theaters, and streaming content generating buzz like big blockbusters, it's possible that there will come a day when it wouldn't matter if a film was shown in theaters, on tv, or in streaming.

Sure, film directors and actors are complaining about this at the moment (no one wants to be "demoted" to streaming), but that's more like fighting against the tide. For example, as a moviegoer, I would like to have the choice of whether to watch a film in theaters or stream it in Netflix. Or maybe I want to watch it in theaters on release day and stream it the next day. Hollywood being a business, I think this is a model that they will adopt soon.

Hollywood is not going to end anytime soon. But the changing view of the film market is changing and seeing that Hollywood is now just one of the tentacles (even though it is still very strong) in the midst of so many octopuses wanting to occupy the same space.

This is the kind of competition that Americans need to face to understand that there is a lot of movies (with a lot of quality) spread around the world.

You're right about the competition that Hollywood is facing worldwide. The moviegoing audience is no longer limited to North America. I think even movie studios know this. It could be why most of them are attempting to make films for an international audience, but with varying success.

Last year's Oscars showed that, too. And as a fan of international cinema, I know there is a lot of good content out there just waiting to discovered by a bigger audience.

When I read the review of a horror movie and it says USA I think twice.

The same formula, the same scares, the same stories....

True. For me, when it comes to horror, I think Asian cinema is leaps and bounds in delivering the scares. Even when American studios remake an Asian story, it becomes less scary.

I think it is kinda tricky talk about the future of something as solid as Cinema, but one thing is certain: the space will have to be splitted with the streaming channels (which are growing absurdly and investing more and more money in their oringial productions and getting nominations in important awards, in addition to gaining more and more new subscribers).

These are two opposite sides (with two different types of audience) of the same coin.

which are growing absurdly

i think that some of them are going down longterm or they may be merged, sold to others.

Hi, I like the 7th art, I confess that I have not been to a movie theater for years, the last time I went there was a person behind me who kept talking about the movie .....

I haven't read the other reviews but I would say the following:

My ideal experience is to have a state of the art home theater, a special room in my house with super comfortable seating.

I would like an experience like Playstation games, I would like to be inside the movie as a virtual reality character.

I would like to monetize the movie experience, that is, not just pay the entrance fee or buy the movie....
monetize the opinion, after finishing the movie access to a chat to share my impressions with other fans of the genre and that this live review is monetized.

I would like movies and series to have alternative endings.

To have at my disposal the catalog of movies of my favorite genre from all over the world.

Support new generations of filmmakers, with fresh new ideas and have that catalog available.

Finally I believe that Hollywood is not all there are many things to change and I support 100% the Streaming has been my best experience, I decide the time, I don't like to be bothered, I want a total experience.

Thanks
