What Can YOU Do To Prepare For Covid-19?

By now, anyone who’s been paying attention understands that the official statistics coming out of China are bogus. The Chinese government has many reasons to downplay the severity of the outbreak. But not just the Chinese government. Plenty of other governments have strong incentives to encourage Don’t Panic messaging.

Even if we give them the benefit of the doubt and assign them a 95% chance of being honest with us and a 95% chance that their honest opinions are correct, there’s still almost a 10% chance (0.95x0.95=0.9025) that they’re lying and/or mistaken.

Oops, what then?

So it makes a lot of sense to take some precautions now while you have a chance. Part of that is simply stocking up on some supplies while it’s still relatively easy to do so. And if everything works out just fine, at worst you’ve got some extra stuff in your closet that you’ll probably use at some point in the future.

For some things though, it might be too late. Masks for instance. Sure, against the threat of a viral infection, masks really aren’t all that effective. They’re really better to be used by someone who’s already infected, to help somewhat lessen their chances of spreading the virus to others. Even there though, maybe only marginally effective. But even if you wanted to acquire masks, good luck with that. My local Home Depot has sold out of N95 masks and Amazon seems to be out of stock. Some third-party sellers have a few, at triple the price of a few weeks ago. Even those cheapie disposable masks that aren’t anywhere near as effective as N95 are hard to find. A month ago, a 10-pack of them could be had for a buck in a dollar store. Today I found a 100-pack online for $94.99 so I think it’s safe to say that available masks have become few and far between. And if you do manage to find any, the packaging will probably say Made in China. How long will that supply chain be up and running?

But there are plenty of other preparations you can still do. For now.

IF the Don’t Panic messaging turns out to be misplaced and Covid-19 rips through societies on anything like the scale of the “Spanish” Flu, healthcare systems will be overwhelmed. You might even have to set up a “sick room” (old “official” CDC page /newer unofficial page) in your home.

Some supplies that you might need would be easy to find now but might be very hard to find later. Basics like OTC meds to help keep a fever in check, tussin to help control coughing, disposable gloves, Pedialyte or its generic equivalent, things like that. All easy to acquire now, most manufactured in China.

Other than a bit of fiat, what have you got to lose?

I'm not sure what to believe. But I do think that if the virus was far more deadly than the typical flu, there would be no survivors from the quarantined boat. I think it will take its toll worldwide, but I think the average person will experience it as a bad flu.

Age seems to be a big factor, particularly with the elderly. With the seasonal flu, the very young and the very old are particularly at risk. Covid-19 appears to be different. Of the 2,000+ deaths so far reported, as far as I know none have been infants.

I don’t know but it is all fear tactics to me. I was diagnosed with the swine flu back in the day when it was the hype of the hour, and the public hospital gave me some free medicine for the treatment. I tossed them on the trash bin on my way out and in three days I was good as new. Other people who took the medicine didn’t get well so fast and the medicine gave them some nasty side effects on the long run. So yeah, I do not believe anything mass media says at all.

Those huge concentrations of humanity really do have a self destruct or pruning mechanism built into them don’t they?

I am waiting to see what ripple/wave the shut down in China is going to cause. If they control the epidemic and the immediate threat is reduced, there is going to be some neat supply and demand effects that will impact the price and availability of goods around the world.

What a time to be alive with a mask on.

The world is so full of fake news and biased journalists that, nowadays, it's nearly impossible to know who to trust. Just look at the example of Syria. The Western agencies have lied since the beginning and they are still lying now. The same governments claiming to fight ISIS are the first ones giving financial, medical and logistic support to the Islamic State (Yes, I'm looking at you: USA, Turkey and Israel.)

So, when such news about a global epidemic arises... I haven't got a clue about who's lying and who's telling the truth.

That's the sad reality of the world we live in...

So, what to do regarding this case? Well, I'm not doing anything. I don't even turn on my TV to see the "news", since I can't trust them to say the truth.

Thanks for making me a beneficiary of this post. That was a nice surprise.

Thank you for the SBI!
Fwiw, N95s have always been more expensive than a buck for a 10 pack, but they have gone up in price. I first noticed the uptick though with the Australia wildfires, well before coronavirus. I got my box of 20 for $17, if I'm remembering the numbers right, around a month ago. A couple of months prior it would have been more like $12.
