Sometimes, I wonder

Sometimes, I wonder!

Last week our clothes dryer started making a terrible clunk and squeak sound. I was not sure what was wrong so I had my wife call our trusted appliance guy who we have used on several occasions in the past. He is generally quick to respond and quick to fix the problem.

For some reason, we were not able to get ahold of him and our messages were not returned.

I have a real hard time with finding people I trust to come into my home and fix something so I was faced with the challenge.

Off to YouTube!

I have to admit, YouTube does make these projects easier and is generally helpful.

I found a couple of videos that covered the repair very well. It turns out that the most common reason for the problem is an idler pully assembly. or maybe a drum roller, or possibly the dry belt itself.

The good thing is that they sell a kit that contains all of these items.

Now for the FUN part

In order to replace this little pulley, you have to totally disassemble the dryer housing and remove the drum.

All of this had to be done to access this pulley!

So, this make me wonder what the engineer who designed this dryer was thinking as far as future access to essential parts of the machine.

I am no engineer and I generally have great respect for engineers but these kind of things really make me wonder.

Okay, so the first part is completed. Now I wait for the replacement parts to arrive and hopefully, I will not spend my entire day off this week putting this all back together.

Until next time,
John Novak

Haha, so you also have an issue finding people that you can trust to deliver good work? It made me laugh a bit, sorry! For several years now, we constantly come to the conclusion that professionals are often not that professional as we find faulty constructions/repairs constantly. Sometimes even dangerous!

I'm glad you managed to DIY, it's a brave thing to open it and just try, but it probably saved you some costs ;)

Yeah, it will end up being less expensive but I don't mind paying someone I can trust.
I will post an update when I complete it.
Thanks, @thisismylife for commenting.

I agree, I really don't mind that either if someone delivers a good job, but it sucks when they aren't available when you need them. Good luck with the job :)

Damn, I am impressed and I hope it all goes to plan when the parts arrive. YouTube really is a lifesaver, people are becoming harder and harder to find and unreliable now, so I am like you and resort to YouTube too!

I really believe that all the machines in the household are made and designed with a lifespan. Some parts are located at places they will broke after a few years. Or the parts are located in places where you can't reach them easily. I had a car where I could change the right front light, which was already difficult, but not the left front light. My mechanic told me that he had to go over the wheel housing and could then replace the light.

Yes, I agree. It is just crazy the way things are designed.

It is nice that you are a DIY person, it comes really handy in the house. Thanks to the video, virtually half the work is done, the rest should hopefully go smoothly too. Best wishes.

Thanks, @gratitudemine. I try to do what I can, but I would always prefer to have someone do it for me, lol

Sometimes you just gotta do it yourself. Thats awesome that it did not scare you off. I think most people would have not have even tried.
I have always liked tearing things apart and figuring out what is wrong.
I drove my parents nuts. It has not changed. sometimes I can fix the problem. It is always worth a try.'

I was the same way growing up. I don't mind a challenge if there is good information helping me get it done.
Thanks, Tom. I appreciate the feedback.

Brave man to try and fix it. I have done some of the same and keep putting off getting the new Dryer for another 6 months.

Thanks, Steve. Part of the problem is that it is only 4 years old. Just don't seem to be as dependable as they used to be.

awesome work John! I also wonder about cars, some of those parts or bulbs are not reachable easily either!

I know, Steve. They do not make it very easy to work on.

Sometimes I think maybe they do it on purpose because they DON'T want you to fix your machine but buy a NEW one.

Good luck with that. Keep us posted!

I've found Youtube to be a great tool for various fixes.

Oh boy! That reminds me of last fall when Roy had to replace the bearing in my Dad's wash machine. The first part they sent was not the right one. We had it spread out all over the basement because my Dad has like no room to work where the wash machine and dryer are located. Fingers crossed they send you the correct part.

That is my hope, lol.
I have dealt with this parts supply store in the past and they are very reliable.
Thanks, Lisa.

You're welcome, John. It's great to have a vendor you can rely on for that kind of stuff. Have a great day! 😀
