Penny, Chinese Crested Dog

If you follow me, you know that I have a cat. There are many posts about her and I have to admit I have much less about the dogs. I have two dogs - Penny and Jade and today I my post is about Penny.

My dogs are Chinese crested, a breed that may not be very popular or well known. Penny is hairless and she has little fur that forms her crest and socks around her paws. The breed is part of the toy group and these little dogs are great companions.

Six years ago a message in one of the Facebook groups appealed for a home of the doggies. Very emotional decision it was from our side to offer new home for two adult dogs. Risky in some way too. They could not adapt or they could be having serious issues. Luckily the dogs get used to us and the new place rather quickly. It took us about a week to make them feel content. We did the checks at the vets, chipped and jabbed them and they had their EU passports. The only thing we never understood was the age of Penny.

Their previous owner told us little about them. She personally had rescued Penny from a horrible place where Penny was used for breeding and poor doggie was very stressed. God knows how she was treated. When Penny got new home, the woman who rescued her didn't know she had pregnant dog. After four years she found herself in dire straits and that was how she asked somebody to take care of Penny and one of the puppies. Actually they were not puppies, but 4 years old doggies. She kept the sister of Jade, who unfortunately died some time after we got the other two.

I always wonder how one can feel to come to such decision to give away her dogs. We are now so used to have them around and they are inseparable part of our family.

So, when Penny was rescued, her previous owner said she didn't know her age. Now we can only speculate how old she might be. Jade is 10 years old and it is not certain she is from Penny's first litter.

You can see from her face she is an old dog. She has problems with her heart, her legs. Walks are half way carrying her as she cannot make it for long.

When at home both dogs are only sleeping and they cause no troubles at all. The troublemaker though is the cat.

Penny still bears emotional scars from her past. She panicked quickly when her daily routine changes. Also she is more attached to me, while Jade is more of my hubby's dog. Everyday Penny knows that at 5.30 pm I am back from work and she will drag my hubby to the bus stop where the company van drops me back from work. If I am on a business trip and I miss from home, than it is hard to convince her that I am not coming home. She would wait for me at the bus stop.

Another important lesson we learned having these two dogs is about their separation anxiety. We cannot leave them alone as they are not just panicked, but they start to howl in a horrible way. This howl is known as crested choir. If one of the dogs starts, the next will follow. It may happened in other circumstances if someone whistles or they hear from the telly other dogs howling. Believe me or not, these little buggers make such a noise, that can be heard on the other side of the street and our neighbours wouldn't be happy at all.

My hubby is 24/7 with them and perhaps that also make them feel anxious when he is out for an hour or two.

A piece of advice if you ever decide to have Chinese crested as a pet - be aware that this breed requires special care. If Penny is hairless and as you can see that she has no fur and her skin is bare, Jade is powderpuff and she has double coat and long fur that we constantly trim. Penny's skin is just like our human skin and hygiene is important part of her daily routine. Hairless dogs sweat and their pores can be blocked by dust, then comes the task of removing the black spots with coconut oil. Penny has regular baths to keep her skin clean and trimming the places where her fur is so rare that if left to grow, she will look like she has some disease.

Another thing that should be considered is the clothes. In winter she wears coats, jumpers when not so cold and t-shirts for summer. She has to be kept warm when we are outside. In summer we have to keep her away from the scorching sun, because she can get sunburned. Still, she has some sun tan during the summer months.

The plus side of having Chinese crested dog is that they fit well with people having asthma. Their fur does not shed and there is no problem with dog fur on your clothes or furniture.

Nothing can be compared with the unconditional love we receive from Penny and Jade. The stress from the day is gone when I see them waiting for me, wagging their tails. Later when we all are settled after dinner, Penny will snuggle and will snore quietly on my lap or will stretch on my belly if I decide to lay down watching telly.
