Sunday Musings: Escaping the Onslaught of Constant Overreactions...
"The Coronavirus should be good for Steem..."
Maybe that sounds like a trivializing statement — at least on the surface — but realistically speaking surfing the Internet is actually one of the few safe activities we have, during these times of voluntary quarantines and restricted travel.
That said, I find myself reaching "maximum density" (and feeling a sort of "weary exhaustion") on the media shitstorm surrounding it all.
As a friend observed yesterday, the real emergency and crisis is being largely drowned out by the political spectacle of posturing through finger pointing and blame assignment and Political Decisions Of Great Importance.
I love this satirical video from @thejuicemedia (yes, they actually have an account here but never got it going, sadly)... it's really worth three minutes of your life — plus, the underlying message is important:
What's my point here? Well, instead of further freaking ourselves the fuck out as a result of the pervasive onslaught of fear-based reporting, let's make the most of the reality we are facing.
So you're stuck at home...
Rather than endlessly surf for "bad news" that only confirms that everyone is terrified and "The World Is Going To End," how about using some of that home time to just write some of those blog posts you've "been meaning to" get done?
That's just one of the things I am doing with my time.
How about listing all those items you were "meaning to get rid of" on eBay, like you said you wanted to? With nothing to do, and so many sporting events canceled, you can be sure that "surfing eBay" is one of those things people will be doing... so might as well do something you can do.
Oh, so you meant to write a book? You were going to get back into doing more art projects? You were going to bring your old guitar out and start writing songs? You need to reorganize the garage?
So DO those things... rather than being glued to the TV, or surfing Internet news channels... while growing even more petrified that you're going to run out of bogroll...
Up here in the northern hemisphere, spring is about to happen... so go work in your yard, like you always said you wanted to!
What's my point here?
We Have a Choice!
We can either feed into the fear and overreact as part of a case of widespread panic... or we can rationally and sensibly respond to the situation and get on with our lives.
Simply adapting and getting on with life under the current conditions will actually help alleviate our fears. It may not be "life as usual," but when you're engaged in something other than being afraid, you'll end up feeling better!
As someone who has wrestled with anxiety disorders for much of my life, I can tell you it's no fun to get trapped in your fearful thoughts... and one of the best things you can do for yourself is break state and engage in your hands-on surroundings.
Spring is busting out!
And, with that, I'm going to head off and start revising some of my old blogs... and get some of those odd bits and pieces from the closet and the attic out on eBay.
I invite you do do something similar... even if just for a few hours!
Thanks for reading!

Well, being online creating content, or working on other creative projects just strikes me as a lot more interesting than sitting and endlessly looking for news stories that are filled with fear and confirm just how hosed we all are.
Thanks for the various "tips!"
