Hello wood, meet your long lost friend sunlight!

After painstakinly ripping off the ugly ass plastic carpet using a hot air torch thingy, scraper, knife and brute force, a beautiful original wood floor was revealed, painted with the same colour we have found in two of the bedrooms so far.

Sadly it’s ruined with an insane amount of carpet glue on every inch AND in every single crack between the planks. We had to use a litre of paint remover and hours and hours of scraping to get the majority of the glue and paint off the surface. That took us another long afternoon.

On day three I was working on this alone all day, scraping off all the thich ass glue and the old linen insulation between the planks. I went through every inch digging with the knife and then vacuuming the loose grime. I am going to re-insulate the cracks with linen fibre after the floors have been sanded. My right hand is so sore but I think I’m doing pretty fucking good so far.

It’s truly a miracle I didn’t stab myself on accident, these bare limbs were asking for it.

At the end of the day I washed the floor with vinegar and water to try and get off and neutralise the paint remover residue. This last image is pre wash so it still looks wet and glooby from all that junk, I’ll edit this post tomorrow morning with another photo of the floor when it’s gotten some time to dry.

Edit: here’s a closeup of the ”clean” floor

And now we wait for the floor to dry properly, see if we need to replace the planks next to the outer door and add support, and then we can do a shit ton of sanding. I really want to get to the next stage already!

And only for a few squares. I fucking hope the industial carpet thingy we have in the hallway is not glued on like this because I’d loose my fucking mind!

Would it be better to hire a floor sander and take off a couple millimetres? It's pretty simple, just punch the nails in a little further, sand, fill nail holes, prime and paint.

I am not in charge of the sanding part so I’m not sure what kind of machine the man has plans to use. We are most certainly not doing it by hand 😅

There's some things that should be done by hand, there is no doubt, but sanding floors is not one of them.

Remember to polish the wood carefully.

This is not a wood joke.

So no kuramatto? I've found one to be indispensable. Otherwise too much of the dirt will end up on the floors in the house.

Yes well one does need carpets, and we have several of those kuramatto’s but mostly for the dog and I’m trying to replace all those modern ugly things little by little in all my living areas. We have a juuttimatto on the hallway and that seems to work pretty well, it’s natural and heavy and easy to vacuum.

I'm sure, it's one of your hard work, right?

The cleaning process consumes a lot of energy. Mainly the energy to throw "annoyance" in your head over every inch of dirt that is there.
But, you really persevere and it won't be long before you actually get the best wood flooring ever.

Keep it up, @eveuncovered!

I’ve understood you have a bit more experience with renovation so I take that as a big compliment, thank you!
