Gardening solutions and getting lucky from other people's DIY disasters

I bought this nifty lightweight shelving at my local junkshop for a quarter of the price they sell for, it seems that whoever bought it had no idea how to assemble it and then donated it to charity, where it was deemed too wonky to be saleable and put in the super-cheap corner. "Oh, that rickety thing, how are you going to stabilise it?" asked the owner. I replied that it would be easy.

Next task: disassembly to take it home by motorcycle but it folded up surprisingly small and I fitted the loose parts in between the shelves and tied it up and strapped it to the back seat with bungee cords

These things are actually maddening to assemble if you don't know some tricks that you won't be told in the instructions. Firstly, the structure twists as you build it and stability starts at ground level so the first thing I did was to take all the support pieces and put them in the corners on both sides at the bottom shelf.

Next: assemble the entire thing without tightening the bolts because this is when the frame starts to twist. So all the nuts and bolts should only be finger-tight. Once everything is together, get the unit onto a flat level surface and place heavy weights on the top shelf, to straighten the frame out. It will square up without any extra effort and only then should you take a spanner and screwdriver and tighten all of the nuts.

Now my wonky purchase is rock solid and I have a lot more space for all the seedling trays and everything else that takes up too much surface area. Shelving like this is an ideal solution for people like me who have too many plants.
My Phalaenopsis orchids bloomed happily in this room so now that I have enough space to put them back there, hopefully they will start blooming again. Underneath are all my succulent seedlings that I started from seed, mainly haworthia and Hoodia gordonii, as well as all the gasterias which actually dislike being grown outside like succulents and are much happier when grown inside as houseplants, without any direct sun at all
