Installing a new garbage disposal, and how a car jack saved the day

The old disposal, probably original to the house finally gave out. Well it froze up and would not operate. I was hoping using the allen key at the bottom of the unit would free up whatever was causing it to get stuck, but it would not budge at all. So I had no choice but to replace the garbage disposal.

For awhile I just ignored the issue and we used a strainer to keep more food stuffs from going into it.

Removing it went pretty smooth, smelly but smooth. Some of the stuck food materials came out when taking it apart and had a pretty bad smell to it. And so did the u-shaped pipe, guess the smells from the sewer tried to escape. I plugged it with a glove and got to work.

Always bring a bucket, never know when fluids will try to escape when taking it apart. I placed the u-bend pipe in there as it was pretty nasty.

I took the outlet port from the old disposal, and attached it to the new one. And got ready to wire up the new one.

Things went pretty smooth until I had to attach the new unit to the sink. The manual makes it sound way too easy. I found it nearly impossible to lift it and to also work the connector at the same time. I got the idea to use a car jack to hold it in place, and was suprised how much easier to made it with the helping hand of hydraulics. I may not need 3 tons to lift this 20 pound disposal but it did the job regardless.

Once I got the jack under the disposal and cranked it up ever so slightly. Just until there was pressure holding it in place. Im pretty sure if I kept pumping that jack it would have lifted my sink out of kitchen sink.

When it was tight up against the sink attachment, I was able to easily twist it into place locking it with the allen key. No one said it would be this easy with a jack, but also no one said it would be this hard without one. Maybe I was doing it wrong, but in the end I did it right just with car tools.
