An excellent longread about the US Marshalls’ need for prison cells and the poor health and prisoner safety standards your tax dollars by.

This investigation essay by Seth Freed Wessler highlights several cases in which poor prisoner care was offered, often with lethal outcome and whether the Marshalls took such issues in consideration when evaluating the prisons they sent inmates to.

Needless to say, the essay wouldn’t exist if everything was without problems. Sadly enough, it seems the US Marshalls are ill equipped, and trained, to properly evaluate the prison system and too often tax dollars are spent on poorly maintained prisons. The Marshalls also often ended with clean evaluations of prisons where other agencies highlighted known issues in the same period.
