Dpoll 61: Do you know what this opening is meant for?

The old Toshiba is back.

My kid wants to make It operate with Linux.

It has a question I can not answer although I used it for bookkeeping.

It is a Toshiba.

It has all kind of *"plugins"

But what is the use of this?

Something can be pushed in. Somehow it reminds me of a V-tech laptop I once bought for my children. It was educative (maths, language, history, etc) and you could add extra lessons by buying extra memory.

Do you know what this opening is meant for?

  • No, I have no laptop experienced

  • Yes, it is.... (Please, tell me)

  • No idea.

  • Other, .... (share what's on your mind)

Answer the question at dpoll.xyz or here. Thank you for your vote/answer. It is highly appreciated.

  • Yes, it is....

The top slot is a PCMCIA card slot.

I think the lower one is perhaps a type of Firewire (IEEE 1394) port.

I mean the top slot.
What is a PCMCIA card? I doubt I ever seen one. My child will be so happy with this answer.

Thank you so much 💕

You are welcome @wakeupkitty!

PCMCIA cards predate USB ports and were used to expand a laptop's capabilities and were used to add a LAN port, WiFi card, Modem or some other needed piece of hardware.

You can read some about them here: https://kb.iu.edu/d/ahtn

It is a firewire port, once used as a high speed interface for hard drives, before USB 2 and USB 3 came out with faster transfer rates.

There are two ports on the last photo.
The upper (bigger one) is a PCMCIA card slot, and the little port under it is a FireWire port. My Toshiba Satellite A110-110 also have both of these ports, but I currently do not remember using the FireWire. Maybe I have used it. With some kind of mini camera, but I am not sure about that. Maybe the cable was mini-USB to the camera, and standard USB to the laptop, so I probably have not used FireWire so far. Or at least I currently do not remember using it.

It is a pcmcia slot. Meant for extra memory for laptops. Usb took it over.
