"Fleece" is a verb, and don't do it!

You can fleece someone out of their money in a scam, fraud or overcharge.

This is the type of thing I searched to find when I was working as an accountant. The topic over there is called "Waste, Fraud and Abuse". I took a college class in it and enjoyed seeking it out for companies I worked for.

The vast majority of problems in this area are waste. People do not understand what they are doing and so waste the company's resources without even knowing at times. Once you point it out or change procedures, the trouble goes away.

Fraud is intentional, and I found it a few times. It's hard to cover your tracks when your have to use the company's systems to spend money. In one case, a manager was re-doing his kitchen with material and labor from his department.

Once we noticed invoices coming through for things the company did not need and would not buy, it was easy to get people to talk about what the were doing with this stuff. The employees doing the work had been assured and convinced that it was on the up and up and so spoke of it freely once asked.

This is one of the only times I felt threatened in the workplace. When the manager was called to the accounting office to go over the invoices he came enraged and slammed in the door yelling. He passed me and went to my manager's desk.

I walked out and got another manager to call the head office. The end of the story was that he was escorted off the property never to return.

I know that fleece can also be a warm fabric, but I am in the tropics and prefer talk about it in this other regard.

The tropics would be welcome just about now with temperatures here getting down below zero, but I suppose I’ll have to settle for a warm fleece jacket.
