Have you ever played snow tag? - My Thursday Favorites #23 Contest Entry

Growing up as a fat kid in snow and cold weather is not my favorite thing to look back on. But one thing I did enjoy was playing games of snow tag.

We often lived in places where the snow fell all winter and rarely melted. This builds and builds and is not easy to negotiate.

Snow tag is best played in fairly deep snow. You first have to stamp out a pattern somewhere. You can get the idea of the pattern in the media off my poster above. You make paths and “safe” places where the paths connect, and this ends up being like a wheel.

The wheel can keep getting more layers out if you are in a big enough place with flat land. Flat land covered in snow is something we had a lot of. So over time the snow tag course got larger and larger. When new snow fell you had to stamp out the paths again, but the course would be there until spring came, if it ever did.

The game is played like any other game of tag. The person who is “it” calls out and all run to the next safe place and hope not to be tagged. For my part, I got as far away to the outside of the wheel I could and hoped no one would get me. I liked the stamping part and then used the game part to stare at nothing and write in my head.

Did I mention snow tag was often played in the dark of night? Yes, we had very short days, and so my best memories of this game are when I was looking at stars in a black sky while standing in a safe place.

My post today is for the weekly Thursday Favorites Contest by @marblely for ccc. This week she wants to know about some of you favorite photos, so pick some, and you are in!

Hehe this is a cute game. I used to play a similar game but with building pillars since there is no snow for me. But it would be quite an effort to create the wheel in deep snow? Do kids still play them now?
