The True Story of My Favorite Number 26

I use the number 26 whenever I need to pick a favorite. It is the age I was when I changed my life. This is the year I made up my name of “fitinfun” on the same day as this change happened.

I am 60 now. I have had a life of poor health, and by the time I was 26 I had been told I was about to die, l almost died, or should be dead, so many times I cannot count them. This started with my birth that almost did not happen, all though childhood, several times in my teens, and on and on we go.

On this day at 26, I was just out of yet another surgery. Work was on the phone wanting to know when I would be back.

I was groggy from just waking up when my surgeon walked in to tell me I almost died on the table. He told me this while work was asking me about various file folders for payroll, and I just wanted everyone to leave me alone.

Two hours later, the anesthesiologist came in to tell me "You almost died, and nothing I was doing could save you. Your blood pressure just kept dropping. I stopped all my procedures, and then somehow you came back. Something is really wrong with you."

I was so upset that I threw him out of the room.

Whenever I tell this story, I can still see him. He was very young, and very concerned. Maybe I was one of the first people he had almost lost. I know I scared the hell out of him with my anger.

I decided at that moment as he left to stop living like I was going to die at any minute, and "Be sure to fitinfun no matter what" came to my mind. No more bad days fearing death. Thank God for that, since this time was so long ago, and I have still continued with poor health and near-death experiences ever since.

It wasn’t until I was 37 that I was diagnosed with a genetic heart condition that should have killed me by 20. This was responsible for some (not all!) of those near death experiences. This freakish problem is why I do not do well under “normal” anesthesia and explains why I lived when it was stopped.

Every time I am told I should be dead, I say. "Fine. I am fitting-in-fun no matter what. I’m not dead yet.”

I’m always so grateful for that very bad day. I always think 26 in my lucky number and win contests often with it on STEEM :)

I am so glad you lived that day to tell this story. So that is how you have "fitinfun" :) I think it is a wonderful mantra. I knew there must be a story behind it but I wasn't expecting it to be from way back when you were 26. I believe in fate and I think it was just not your time yet. I am surprised at how negative the anesthesiologist was. Would have been more pleasant to the ears if he said "You survived!" instead of "Something is really wrong with you" :P
