The old and the new ways of life along side streets in Chinatown, Bangkok. วิถีชีวิตเก่าและใหม่ในย่านชาวจีนที่เยาวราช

This is my entry for #marketfriday hosted by the lovely and kind @dswigle. This is a continuation of my journey back to my cultural and ancestral root in Yaowarad or Chinatown in Bangkok. This returning journey makes it possible for me to go forward as I have to understand my cultural heritage as a basis of my ‘Weltanschauung’ or ‘world view’.

Wat Traimitr was my starting point for exploring the side streets of Chinatown along Yaowarad Road. The shop-houses opposite the temple and around the China Gate have not changed much in terms of their merchandise. These old Chinese families have continued their families’ businesses for at least three generations. I could see most of them still selling metal materials for construction and parts for machine tools including spare-parts for engines including metallic goods.

These shop-houses would not survive the onslaught of e-commerce as new players have been using internet and homepages to market their goods at factory prices with free delivery for bulk order. Competitions have become very fierce and these vendors would not understand why their businesses have been rather slow lately. Most of the vendors are traditional Chinese families who have been living here for almost a hundred year. They still rely on face-to-face interaction and use manual system for keeping their inventories. I was very surprised to find traditional grocery store with all kinds of household goods and cooking utensils stacked high in one shop-house. The Chinese owner must have been over seventy years’ old; he was falling asleep on the chair behind the high stack of goods so I chose not to disturb his afternoon nap. I often feel very disturbed and very concerned for these old grocery stores. The vendors had to invest their money in stocking up all their inventories with the hope that customers would be buying them like hot cakes as these were essential tools for house keeping. They could not see that people preferred to buy things in air-condition shopping malls with lots of parking space.

Manual workers are still to be seen walking around with heavy metal cart. There are still lots of poorly educated Chinese workers living and working for old Chinese shops. I grew up with these Chinese workers as they were working in shop-houses around my old house. I had a lot of sympathy for them as they were mostly very simple minded people with strong loyalty to their masters. The digital divide will certainly leave them behind in the near future. I often wonder what would happen to all these Chinese people who are stuck in the old era.

The China Gate used to be a very nbeautiful fountain which displayed changing colours. This fountain was opposite a very famous cinema called the Odean so old water fountain was called the Odean fountain. Both the cinema and water fountain were gone many years ago.

The Kwan Yin Shrine with a hospital for free treatment of poor Chinese people was set up by a group of Chinese merchants over a hundred years ago. The immigrants brought with them their sacred religious symbols and beliefs for protection, spiritual security, good luck and prosperity. There are more old shop-houses continuing with their ancestral business: metal tools and Chinese herbal medicine.

Tourism has changed many shop-houses into coffee shops, restaurants and hostels. I was quite impressed by a new coffee shop with modern interior design of the seating areas for increasing seating capacity. It is so strange seeing two middle-age Chinese ladies running around taking orders from their customers. They really made a big effort to jump over the cultural gap.

Very close by this coffee shop is a new hostel with an artificial garden and 3D painting on the wall. There is a sign saying that photography is welcome. Most of the people and stalls along this road do not really like to be photographed. The owner of this new hostel has made a big marketing effort to keep up with the new trend. From their paintings, I could tell that the owner wanted to attract certain groups of tourists.

เราไปเดินเล่นแถววัดไตรมิตรเพื่อหาร้านอาหารที่น่าพาเพื่อนไปลอง แล้วเดินดูความเปลี่ยนแปลงของชีวิตคนจีน และการทำมาหากินของคนรุ่นก่อน ว่ามีการปรับเปลี่ยนไปจากเดิมหรือไม่ เราทั้งแปลกใจและเป็นห่วงที่เห็นร้านเก่าแก่ ยังคงขายสินค้าอย่างเดิมตามที่รุ่นปู่ย่าและพ่อแม่ได้ขายต่อกันมามากกว่าหกสิบปีเดือบแปดสิบปี แถวนี้ที่ใกล้กับวงเวียนโอเดียนเก่าซึ่งกลายมาเป็นประตูไชน่าเกทในปัจจุบัน จะมีร้านที่ขายอุปกรณ์เหล็กแบะเครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการก่อสร้างเรียงรายติดกัน และมีร้านขายอาไหล่รถจักยานยนต์ด้วย เขายังใช้วิธีการค้าขายแบบเก่า คือไม่มีอินเตอร์เน็ตและไม่มีโฮมเพช ต่อไปทุกอย่างจะเป็นดิจิตอลหมด ถ้าเขาไม่เปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างมากมาย เขาจะสู้คู่แข่งขันในโลกยุคใหม่ได้อย่างไร

เราเดินไปตามทางผ่านศาลเจ้าแม่กวนอิมที่ต้นถนนเยาวราช เราก็ยังเห็นร้านที่ขายเครื่องมือ และวัสดุในการก่อสร้างที่เป็นเหล็ก และร้านขายยาจีนที่มีหมอจีน และขายยาจีนสมุนไพรแบบสมัยก่อน แต่พอเดินถัดไปหน่อยก็เจอร้านกาแฟที่ออกแบบทันสมัย และแหวกแนวเพื่อเรียกลูกค้า ที่ตลกคือ เจ้าของร้านเป็นคนจีนรุ่นเก่าสองพี่น้องในวัยกลางคน เที่ยวเดินจดรายการของลูกค้าอย่างแข็งขัน เราดูแล้วคนจีนวัยกลางคนนี้ คงดื่มเป็นแต่ชาจีน แต่เพื่อความอยู่รอด เขาต้องเปลี่ยนบ้านเป็นร้านกาแฟ เราทึ่งในความพยายามที่จะก้าวให้ทันยุคที่เปลี่ยนไป

บางบ้านลงทุนเปลี่ยนบ้านเป็นโฮสเตล มีการวาดรูปแบบสามมิติบนกำแพงบ้าน เพื่อดึงดูดนักท่องเที่ยว รูปก็สดใสและสื่อความหมายที่คุ้นเคยกับชาวต่างชาติด้วย และยังเอาเอกไม้สีแดงมาแต่งสวนหน้าบ้านให้เด่นขึ้น

At the first cross road, I followed the small road to the left to search for a very old Chinese coffee shop which is almost eighty years old. These shop-houses still sell shoes of all kinds; it’s known as the shoe street where people could come to buy shoes at factory prices to be sold in their own shops in the provinces. A few houses have been transformed into Western style coffee shops. An old house with a nice garden has become a small boutique hotel.

บ้านเก่าในซอยหลังถนนเยาวราชกลายเป็น โรงแรมบูติกและร้านกาแฟมีระดับ แต่บ้านเก่าส่วนใหญ่ยังสืบสานธุรกิจเดิม คือการขายรองเท้านานาชนิดในราคาขายส่ง เพื่อให้คนมารับไปขายตามร้านในต่างจังหวัด มีบางบ้านที่กลายสภาพเป็นร้านกาแฟแบบฝรั่ง เราเดินการ้านกาแฟจีนโบราณที่มีอายุกว่า80ปีแล้ว เราก็เจอร้านนั้นและแวะกินกาแฟแบบดั้งเดิมด้วย

My visit to this old Chinese coffee shop reminded me of my grandfather. My uncles told me that I was raised in a Chinese coffee shop every morning as my grandfather always took me along to his mourning coffee with his friends. No wonder I always had a soft spot for this kind of setting and I naturally felt at home among all the elderly Chinese gentlemen. This old shop has not been maintained properly as the owners seemed to be rather elderly and there has been fewer elderly customers during the years. One day s rich person will buy up the shop and turn it into a modern restaurant with hostel on the upper floor!

เราลองสั่งกาแฟโบราณมาชิมดู เพื่อหวนระลึกถึงปู่ของเรา เพราะว่าเราถูกเลี้ยงในร้านกาแฟจีนสมัยเป็นเด็กๆ บรรดาลุงทั้งหลายบอกว่า คุณปู่เอาเราไปร้านกาแฟทุกเช้า เพื่อไปอวดเพื่อนตอนดื่มกาแฟสังสรรกับกลุ่มเพื่อน มิน่าเล่า เราจึงชอบอะไรที่เก่าแก่โบราณๆ เรารู้สึกสบายมากในสภาพแวดล้อมแบบนี้ เรานั่งจิบกาแฟ และแอบฟังภาษาจีนไปเรื่อย เราคิดถึงปู่ย่าและอดีตที่แสนไกล ร้านนี้กำลังเสื่อมโทรมลงไปเรื่อย เหมือนเจ้าของร้านที่มีอายุกว่าแปดสิบปีแล้ว ลูกค้าเขาก็น้อยลงเรื่อยๆ คนแก่จีนเก่าแก่เริ่มหายไป เราคิดว่าต่อไปคงมีคนมาซื้อตึกนี้ แล้วเปลี่ยนเป็นร้านอาหารติดแอร์สมัยใหม่ และมีห้องเช่าอยู่ชั้นบน ทุกอย่างเปลี่ยนแปลงไปตามกาลเวลา เราคงเกบือแต่ความทรงจำที่จะค่อยๆเลือนลางต่อไป
