Trying to find another favourite street joint with vegetarian food,

avatar

This is my entry for #marketfriday hosted by the generous and compassionate @dswigle. This post is a continuation or second part of my previous post on street food. My first attempt to find a backup street food joint ended up in a very business like noodle place. It was alright for a fast fish ball noodle when one was in a rush. But I would like to find a good stall where I could enjoy my food slowly while observing the world around me, possibly with some rapport among people in the area. So, I continued to walk, under the hot sunshine, along the side street in New Road area (the first road constructed in Siam over 150 years ago by King RamaV for the foreign diplomatic corps and European elites to have somewhere they could trot their horses and race in their carriages! Perhaps, it was the beginning of Polo being introduced to Siamese elites!)

I think I must have been involved in the construction of this road in one of my past lives, as I always get quite personal whenever I write about this road. It brought back some faint resonance of the good old days. I found myself walking along two narrow side streets hoping to settle for my new regular food joint.

This Chareon Wiang road is full of the old shop-houses built during the reign of King Rama V, where the Chinese immigrants could rent cheaply. Nowadays some of these houses have been through different owners but one could still see the old community atmosphere. The old and famous roast duck and crispy pork restaurant can still be found there. The place becomes quiet after lunch time as they are almost sold out.

I was quite impressed by the friendliness of a street food stall selling northeastern food such as sticky rice, grilled fish and pork, including the popular papaya salad (som-tam).

Some people try to make money by selling miscellaneous goods in front of their houses. The entrepreneurial spirit never fades away among the hard working Chinese.

This side street seems to be more of a residential area of those who inherited these houses from their ancestors. There is a spacious car park with a Chao-Tee or land’spirit house to make sure no thief would be allowed to steal any cars.

So, I made my way to the next street called Si Wiang which seemed to be more lively and full of small shops, street food, Thai massage and hair salon, including an old cinema which had turned into a hostel with bistro.

Steamed stick food and charcoal grilled ones. The fish balls and tofu ones looking quite good to me, but I was looking for some cooking sweets after my lunch.

Luckily, I saw an ice-cream tricycle with coconut ice cream so I walked super fast to get my ice cream.

The ice cream man was very nice and kind as he accepted my request for a reduction in price with less ice cream. I could not finish the big cup of ice cream and I wanted to control my sugar in take too. He understood my intention and I got the irregular ice cream: a mixture of coconut, vanilla, strawberry, chocolate, green tea and coffee ice cream, at 15 baht (20 cents). So, now I know where to get my daily coconut ice cream.

y8j0td.jpg

Several lottery vendors tried their best to attract customers by showing all the nice numbers on their display boards.

My second attempt was not successful but I did have a good time waking around the old roads in this area. There’s a Pad-thai restaurant which I wanted to give it a try later. There’s such a big contrast between these simple old shop houses’ atmosphere and the busy New Road nearby. I had to rush off to another place and came back in the evening to make my last effort of locating a street food I would call another of my favourite place.

Wishing you peace, good health and prosperity.

Cheers.

What a lovely tour of this market area @kaminchan! I love all the greenery & flowers 😍 It's cool you feel such a resonance among these streets. What better way to celebrate than with ice cream! Yum ❤🍧

So glad you enjoy this old part of Bangkok. These old houses make the history more alive to me! I could feel the connection to the place and its past hundred years. Most of my friends would not be waking in working class area like this. There is so much humanity and simple joy all around!!

What a wonderful place to wander up and down taking in them all. I would love to Goods close by so that I could just wander up and down and discover a new place every day. It is beyond my comprehension to see houses that have been in the same family for that long, and still operating as a market of sorts. You have some of the most interesting post, delving into people and their lives. I love how open and friendly and willing to have their picture taken. They always seem to give you a smile. :)

What a very nice guy for allowing you to cut your sugar intake while not wasting the food. I must admit that I thought that there was a lot of ice cream in that cup but that you were able to get on post different flavors for $0.20 is awesome. I want to thank you for taking me along and showing me another side street in that beautiful country of Thailand. Such a contrast to where I live and I must say that I truly appreciate all the efforts to share our worlds and bridge the gap. I would love to come and visit before things changed too much because this is such a sweet place! Thank you again for sharing your room and I appreciate all the work it takes to put a post together.

#MarketFriday loves you!

Thank you so much for your encouraging comment and generous tip. The ice cream was really good as it was not very sweet. People here are very friendly; Thai venders are quite sentimental: if they like someone they just give that person more food and ice cream. My regular street food vendor always gives me extra vegetables!

Let’s hope this virus pandemic will be caught dead in its track very soon!

Take care.

Hmm i wonder which ones serve the best mushroom dishes :-). That chicken looks really good too.

For mushroom, you’ll have to go to Nongkhai. Villagers went to gather wild mushrooms to be sold by road side, making lots of money!

Howdy sir kaminchan! How interesting and more street culture to experience. It's so interesting that people have those shops in front of their houses or on the street level of their homes. I really like the looks of that coconut ice cream! I haven't seen coconut ice cream over here, it's all made from dairy milk.

You ought to grow coconut trees!! Then you’ll have the juice, the fruit and make some ice cream!

That sounds wonderful sir kaminchan! I don't even know if they will grow in North Texas, I need to look that up.
