Feathered Friday - Look at the way I glide

avatar

...Skybird
Make your sail
And every heart will know
Of the tale
Songbird
Make you tune
For none may sing it
Just as you do

Look at the way I glide
Caught on the wind's lazy tide
Sweetly how it sings
Rally each heart at the sight
Of you silver wings...
Lyrics from the haunting Neil Diamond song Jonathan Livingstone Seagull

Oh to be as free as a bird and fly wherever the wind takes you!

I will share with you today stunning paintings of the feathered kind by our friend Peter Wink whose first love is sculpting, but he is an accomplished painter and all-round artist as well.

He painted the sea gull above from the photograph below, taken on a quiet beach on the south coast of Kwazulu Natal where we holidayed.

Peter knows our love for the feathered kind and has specially painted birds that he knows we love; aren't we the lucky ones having such a talented and special friend!

One day when Peter and his wife Cheryl, an accomplished potter visited us at home, a little Redbilled Firefinch was darting in and out of our bird bath and we were blessed with the following painting on a follow-up visit.

This is a small perching bird found in most of Sub-Saharan Africa

Gorgeous aren't they?

On yet another visit we were given this beautiful Horned Owl.

An interesting fact about owls is that they glide silently despite their size making it easy to catch their unsuspecting prey.
How do they do this?

An owl's primary feathers are serrated like a comb. This design breaks down turbulence into smaller currents called micro-turbulences. Then the edge of the feather muffles the sound of air flowing over the wing and shifts the angle at which air flows. These soft feathers allow air to pass through which eliminates sound. Some people suspect that, as the owls flies, these feathers may also shift sound energy created by the owl's wing to a higher frequency that prey can't hear.

Another gorgeous painting of a Long-tailed Paradise Whydah, a small sparrow like bird found on the East Coast of Africa.

What a great set of painting of our little dinosaur like flying friends. He really captures the movement of the birds beautifully which is hard to do I can well imagine. Very well written piece too

The paintings become a beautiful collection, a lovely little bit of the outside world inside the home.

Redbilled Firefinch I got very excited seeing them eating from our feeder last summer, one actually flew into the home which I had to redirect outdoors, what a pretty little bird @lizelle

Having friends that paint is a bonus in they know what you enjoy, paint keeping similar theme.
