Feathered Friday: Cedar Waxwings
My entry to #featheredfriday hosted by the lovely and gracious @melinda010100 is the Cedar Waxwings that congregated after Hurricane Dorian passed to eat the pin cherries on the property.
Pin cherries (sometimes called bird cherries) are a small bright red cherry with a large pit. The birds are welcome to eat them. I know some people make jam with the pin cherries but I find them too small to work with and to remove the pit.
The bird’s diet includes cedar cones, insects and fruit.
Their preferred habitat consists of trees at the edge of wooded areas or open forests, especially those that provide access to berry sources as well as water. I often see them in the fruit trees in the backyard when the pin cherries are ripe.

Cedar Waxwings are native to North and Central America, breeding in open wooded areas in southern Canada and imigrating in winter to the southern half of the United States and sometimes going as far South as Costa Rica and Panama.
I like the black strip across the eye area and the Cedar Waxwing’s rustic colouring.
There were a lot of the birds around but I found it difficult to get them to sit still long enough to photograph.
This one is checking the ground for insects.

Don't you wonder how small delicate creatures survive such a powerful storm? Great photos and info about that lovely bird! Thanks for posting to #featheredfriday
Thanks Melinda! 💕 I was happy to see the birds still around after the storm. They are amazing little creatures to survive outside when the hurricane went through.
Nice pictures of that bird, and those cherries look appetizing.
Thanks @truelovemom! The birds know a good thing-the cherries have a nice flavour and make great jam. 😊
Birds always know where delicious things are.
@redheadpei The Cedar Waxwing looks like a bandit with its black eye mask, cool looking bird. The cherries look like they would make good jelly.
Hi @myjob. Yes they are cool to see flocking into the trees when the cherries are ripe. The pin cherries would make good jelly.
Shots are Nicely captured .
Thanks @coolguy222!
You are welcome.
What a lovely little bird!

Cedar waxwings are so gorgeous and you captured their beauty well! I used to literally dream about seeing them in my backyard when I was younger because I only saw them in books and desperately wanted to see them in person. It wasnt until I was an adult that they finally visited our persimmon tree and I got to see them for the first time. Your post reminds me of that exciting moment!
They are a dapper looking bird, @passerine. I’m glad to bring back some exciting memories to you. 😊
What an interesting name Redheadpei, who in world came up with them? Lovely photos.
Angie, Cedar Waxwings really have wax wings. They actually produce waxy secretions that show up as red spots at the end of the secondary wing feathers.
The older the bird the more the red waxy feather tips are visible.
It has been thought that this plumage characteristic is an important signal in mate choice and social organization among the Waxwings.

You're welcome @redheadpei
Beautiful birds @redheadpei :) Love their little black mask over the eyes, it makes them look quite mysterious! Glad to see you weathered the storm, and are recovering well! It's always amazing to see the sun shining after such a tremendous hurricane!
Thanks @birdsinparadise! it’s good to be back to normal after the hurricane.
With the black masks the Cedar Waxwings look like the bandits of the bird world. 😂
Those waxwings are certainly mesmerizing Lady Lo and we don't have them here.
A lovely entry!
Blessings!
Thanks Sir Stephen! They are different looking and it’s great to see them come by.
Beautiful birds my friend!
Blessings!
Nice photography.
Thanks @kamrunnahar!
Nice! I thought I saw one in my yard but then talked myself out of it. No pin cherries, but plenty of other berries here, so maybe I was right after all. Thanks for the pix so that I have more to identify it with if I see one again. Well done.
You’re welcome @owasco. The Waxwings love berries so you probably saw one.
I do miss birdwatching like I did when I was younger. We use to go up to this one park and watch them check tags and write down tracking information on where they were coming from.
A nice opportunity to find out about birds . It would be a fun thing to do, @enjar.
Very interesting redheadpei! I'm glad your trees had some of those berries for those birds, very striking those birds are, I like that black strip on their face.
Thanks Cowboy! The black strip on the face is a nice feature much like the raccoons.
I agree redheadpei! That's what it reminded me of, very cool. I'm surprised their name doesn't reflect that black stripe.
Birds always seem to amaze me in how far they can fly for just a little thing they never run out of fuel...lol 🌝
I do love that there are so many who enjoy doing these #feartheredfridays. It is so fun to see the many birds and learn about them. It has helped make my travel journey a little more interesting.
I have seen many of these Cedar Waxwing birds around and they are so pretty and funny. They chitter and flutter about our place giving the squirrels a time of chaos for sure. haha.
Good post and thanks for sharing it with us.
