Kitchen Purge & Organizing Day! {Plus My Vegan Pantry Staples}

avatar

Hey everyone! I'm taking a break from my Friday off clearing out the kitchen, so I figured I'd share my progress for a little @foodfightfriday action. It might not be the most exciting entry I've shared, but this (as they say) is where the magic starts for all my yummy homemade meals. Gotta have the kitchen stocked and ready for my usual foodie posts. Plus @dandays said it counted, so here I am. 😜

IMG_20190816_123226209.jpg

In my post yesterday I talked about how I'm working on doing some cathartic purging of things that I don't need in our house. Since I ended up with a day off today and it is too hot to enjoy any outdoor activities, I've buckled down to start working on the big job of decluttering and reorganizing the kitchen. Doing this is beneficial in a number of ways. For one I'm getting rid of what we don't use or need to make more space to keep what I do use better organized and accessible. I'm hoping I can donate a good bit of what I'm clearing out to give to someone who may really need these items. It also makes me more mindful of what I have bought in the past to inform future purchases. I think at one point I might have had 3 jars of tahini in the pantry because it was on sale and I forgot about the other jars that were already in there. Woops. At least that won't go to waste!

One of the other big benefits of this task--perfect introvert time! @dksart is still in the basement working on his own projects, but at least I've got the kitchen to myself to play some music and get to business. Normally Fridays are a bit busy between morning sessions and spending the afternoon with my niece, but my usual clients had other business today and my little one is spending the day with mommy and daddy. I miss when I don't see her on Fridays, so I can't say I don't mind the distraction so I don't think about missing out on the auntie fun.

So where do you want to start? How about the spices!

spices.jpg

Though it's not a huge change, it's always nice to go through and organize my spice collection. Yep, I think I've shared before what a spice maniac I am. I usually buy in bulk and then just re-use jars to try to reduce my waste. Plus I go through so much of certain spices that it's cheaper to buy in bulk anyway. To take my purchasing a step further I should probably look into finding places that sell spices in bins so that I really reduce my impact. We do use the old spice jars for saving seeds and other things, as well as using all kinds of other old jars for spices and other bulk goods. Going through and organizing is always a good way to check my stock to see if I need to refill any of my favorites.

IMG_20190816_111852887.jpg

If you enjoy cooking, then having a good selection of spices is key for developing great flavors. I think it is especially key in healthy vegan cooking. Many people wrongly think that vegan food is boring, but if you use good quality ingredients your meals will be absolutely delicious! One of my favorite spices to use is smoked paprika. That makes everything from chili to black bean burgers to veggie tacos taste that much better. I'll save my favorite herbs for the next @naturalmedicine challenge. 😉

IMG_20190816_123107338.jpg

Though I try to avoid buying plastic cups and containers, we are still letting go of old stuff little by little. Between race swag and other freebies it's crazy how much just two people can accumulate over the years! Many times now if I'm at an event I'll decline the cheap free stuff unless it's something I will really use or need. Even the non-plastic stuff adds up. Our kind friends and family often gift us with mugs for tea and coffee, but again there are only so many of those we need. Beer glasses also abound in the cabinet that I haven't tackled yet. We rarely host many people at once, so at this point it just seems silly to keep holding on to things just because. Half the time we end up using our "favorite" cups or mugs anyway!

IMG_20190816_131730483.jpg

In keeping with the food theme, I'll move on along to my next point of attack--the "pantry". We don't have an actual big pantry, so it's really just a cabinet. My dried beans and some of the grains hang out in glass containers on a shelf in the dining room right now so they don't take up space in the small cabinet. While I keep some good staples on hand, a lot of what we eat is all the fresh produce from the farmers market so luckily I don't generally need a ton of pantry space anyway. You can see some of the staples I do keep--a huge bag of quinoa, bean-based pasta for a quick meal in a pinch, nut butters, some dried fruit, a few other items, and of course half the bottom shelf is home for all my nuts and seeds. I can't forget one of the other vegan staples...

IMG_20190816_131744184.jpg

Nooch! Otherwise known as nutritional yeast. This flaky jar of deliciousness makes things taste like cheese. Though I don't really miss cheese a lot, it is nice to have some magic dust that brings that flavor back to some of my meals. It's great to make nut and seed-based cheese, sprinkled in soup or chili, or even on popcorn. I always have some of this on hand and can find it in bulk at many local stores.

IMG_20190816_123145705.jpg

To finish out my progress so far I also organized our tea and coffee shelf and the extra jars. I think this cabinet may have actually been intended as the pantry, but it's so narrow that it's hard to get to things you use frequently. I find it better for storing things I don't need as often. We have a nice little tea bag organizer on the counter by the kettle, so this is technically the back stock. Including some of our dried mint and lemon balm from the garden in the big jars.

Nothing fancy in my old 1960's kitchen, but I'm lucky enough to have plenty of resources to eat well and keep my pantry stocked with some fun stuff! I can definitely still continue my efforts to be mindful of my spending and to be more sustainable in my purchases, but I'm definitely better than I was even just last year! Thank goodness for an awesome farmers market.

On that note, time to get back to work! Happy Friday folks!

Haha, I'm trying! Sometimes it gets out of hand and gets messy, but I know I always feel so much better when I keep everything tidy. Definitely helps not having kids and I'm the one who spends the most time in the kitchen. :) Have a great weekend Cici!

You sure kept yourself busy with all that organizing
It’s good to go through and clean up the kitchen now and again see what your using and not see what needs restocking and what needs ditching
Back when my wife was able to have all kinds of spices she had a huge supply of than and a cleanup like you did was a big task but now we use very few spices so it’s a quick task lol 😂

Thanks for this great post and being an active member of @steemusa !tip

I ended up running out of steam before getting to the lower cabinets, but I'm pretty darn pleased with how far I got today! Simple can sometimes be good. I almost forgot I had a few spices in there! Though now I'm excited to hit the market tomorrow and get creative in my newly organized kitchen. 😉

Oh my goodness, you people and your organisation! Whatever happened to stuffing as much into the pantry as possible and preparing a meal based on whatever happens to fall out? I'm not the only one who does that, surely. :)

Seriously, looks great! A great way to spend some time, particularly for someone who enjoys preparing meals as much as you do. It'll pay off in dividends next week.

Haha! Certain things tend to get a bit messy at times, but it just feels so nice to open up the doors and be able to see every item that's in there. ;)

Thank you! Yes, it's tough sometimes to carve out the time to do it, especially such a big project. However it is definitely worth it to set aside this weekend and knock it out! :)

Had anywhere else said tea bag, nut bag, and nut butter I’d be “where am I and how did i get here??”

I think this contender is a home run chef, thanks for hanging out with us, Friday’s aren’t the same without you.

edit There’s that frikkin loser case I again.

Thanks for the nudge to get me to join with a little "nontraditional" entry. I do have another date bonanza post planned sometime soon, but I have to give my juicy little fruit nuggets the time and space they deserve. No rushed posts for one of my favorite fruits.

Always happy to hang out with you weirdos, as I feel totally at home. ;)

Just a little bit of time and effort can really change not only the physical space but your mindset so much, as well! I can only imagine how good it is going to feel once I totally finish up the kitchen, and then take all of my donations out of the house for good! :)

Excellent job organizing, Marie Kondo @plantstoplanks - can you come over and do my kitchen next? 😉 😂

Our eldest, who is about 80% vegan (if that's possible) is also working on collecting glass jars to store her quinoa, nutritional yeast, and such. She even puts sticky notes on pickle jars in the fridge, and peanut butter jars in the pantry, saying, "SAVE" - LOL!

Looks like you made great strides on your day off - hope you stayed cool in the process. Have an awesomesauce weekend!

Haha, I wish I had a little more Kondo in me, but I'm working on it. I started a while back after reading her book on tidying up, however I think I got stuck at books! If at first you don't succeed, try, try, and try again. ;)

I do love my mason jars, but keeping ones from the store is awesome to have all kinds of different sizes. I'm sure you're daughter will amass a nice collection in no time!

Sunday afternoon and all that's left are the drawers, so a successful weekend! Even better--someone is finally coming by to pickup the second old couch we've been trying to get rid of for years. Wahoo!

Funny I was also organising my pantry on Friday, could almost call it spring cleaning as spring officially starts on 1 September here in South Africa. Like you, I also discover some real gems in the back of the cupboard and some surplus stuff that I give to our housekeeper. I did the same with the freezer and fridge earlier in the week; next up is clothes and shoes! My late uncle used to help me with this task in the past, he was a theatre wardrobe manager. So we used to unpack the entire wardrobe, and if I paused when he asked if I still wear an item, it would go on the charity shop heap :)
Great how much lighter it makes one feel not so :)
I still have to use nutritional yeast.
Happy weekend my friend!

Great minds think alike! I suppose this is fall cleaning here then, haha. Just something about the seasons about to be changing that motivates you to do a little housekeeping.

What a fun partner to have to go through clothes! Perhaps I need to remember that next time I go through my closet again. Though I have pretty well whittled down my wardrobe aside from workout clothes. I am usually pretty good about sending those on when they get worn out. I hope you enjoy your continued cleaning, as well!

You made me think to do a kitchen organizing myself. My spices are all over the place. I really like how your arranged your kitchen stuff.

Sometimes it helps to have a little nudge. :) It makes cooking that much easier when you know where everything is! I even went so far as to alphabetize the spices so that I really have no trouble finding what I want.

More space is sometimes a mixed blessing, haha! I love having room for all my appliances, but it's easy to keep accumulating more junk. Feels nice to have purged a few things and hopefully I'll keep things nice and tidy for a while. :)

I love an organised kitchen!! You should see my Mum's cupboard, it's to die for.

Smoked paprika is one of my absolute favourites!! I can't do a tomato-ey thing without it.

What's your fave noosh recipe?

Oh man, I'm sure I would have major cupboard envy. I love seeing pictures of beautifully organized cabinets. Very soothing.

I don't know how I lived so long without smoked paprika! It was really only in the last few years that I came across it, but now I use it as often as I can.

Hhhmm, I'm going to have to think about what might be my favorite. I did make a cashew cheese for my last nutrition event at work that was quite delicious. Though these chickpea fries and crackers are dynamite, too: https://steemit.com/food/@plantstoplanks/double-the-garbanzos-chickpea-fries-and-crackers

You had a lot to go through. What stood out to me was using old spice jars to store seeds. That's brilliant! I love the idea and will keep that in mind. Thanks!

Yes, it was definitely a full weekend of work! Though it's not the prettiest kitchen with the beige counter tops and old finishes, I can't complain about the amount of space I have to work with. :) That definitely helped as my boyfriend and I both had full kitchens when we moved in together, so now I feel like I'm still getting rid of the doubles of everything. I love finding uses for jars, and the seeds tend to work perfectly to use up the spice jars! The only problem is remembering to mark what we put in them...

Nothing like organizing the old cupboard of spices. I did the same with my spices just last week. I figured that I use more pepper than salt, so I put the pepper in front.
On a more serious note, love the idea of using previously used containers of all sorts. I also saw some quart mason jars in your pantry, boy do they come in handy. We store so many different food items in them, I'm not sure what we would do without them.
Great post @plantstoplanks

Haha, it's good to have your favorite spice close at hand. ;)

Those quart jars really are the best! I save the smaller ones for a lot of things, but that size just works so well for others. I remember buying a big pack of them when they were on sale a few years ago thinking I would never need them all. Boy was I wrong. I've got some empties right now, but I'm also low on some of my bulk goods so I'm sure they'll be filled back up in no time!
