The Worst of Winter is Not the Cold

On a January night, the woman looked out the window with concern. The husband had left early for work and had not yet returned. The cold weather lashed the trees that, naked in the breeze, looked like petrified energy poles. The woman looked at the kitchen and then looked at the table. The dinner served was cold and rigid. When the husband arrived, he would have to reheat the food in order to eat it. He also looked at the wooden lump cornered at the side of the house. The man had searched for them in case there was a storm and they ran out of electricity. The nervous woman looked back out the window, involuntarily, she held her hand to the other as if it were a prayer or was going to pray.

The woman recalled that since they had arrived in that country, everything had become more difficult. The first time she got pregnant, she lost her baby while looking for water in the river. It was very difficult for her because she had already imagined with her little boy, so much that she had knitted clothes, hats and booties. He had to fold and store everything, he also had to keep the tears. The second time, the baby was born with lung problems and only lived a week. From that day he felt that the weather was one of his worst enemies. She always told her husband to leave that area, but he ignored her. When she got pregnant for the third time and lost it again, with that baby she not only lost hope of being a mother, but also of abandoning those cold places.

After that and over the years, the days between the woman and her husband were completely silent. Sometimes, an icy breeze came through the door and she only looked sideways at her husband, who stood up from the sofa to close it and sat down again as if nothing. Other times, the man came home, dead of the cold, and went straight to bed, without eating, without talking to her. One day, the man arrived with a dog and told him it was to keep him company. At first, the woman was reluctant because she did not like animals, but little by little she became fond of the puppy. But one day, the puppy escaped and she tried to look for him, but the afternoon fog erased everything. The endless night and the devastating cold had devoured the dog. After that, the woman remained locked up at home and rarely left. Only in autumn or spring, because it was different and so few days. The woman felt that winter always lasted an eternity, or at least for her and in that house.

That January night, the woman looked at the clock on the mantelpiece. The clock said twelve. That night, like every winter night, was long and endless. Nothing could be seen through the window, so the woman sat on the edge of the living room sofa, attentive to the outside noise. The icy whistles broke the air and knocked on the door making her tremble as if each signal was a whiplash for her heart and her hope. Sitting there I knew the weight of every hour, every moment; He knew what a burning candle lasts, a flame. Tired of waiting so long, the woman leaned back and closed her eyes. He felt that the cold took dimensions and unknown parts of his body. He felt his face froze, his heart too. He looked at the lump of wood in the corner. He thought there were few for the great winter that awaited him in that house.

Your fiction story is very good, @nancybriti. The story deals with a difficult experience, that of a kind of desolation that destiny implants in our lives. It is very much told using the verbal images of the environmental cold and the cold it can take us. Besides, you achieve a physical atmosphere very appropriate to the character's psychological one. Greetings.
