Retro Film Review: Capone's Lost Treasure (1994)

Al Capone is among the most influential figures in the history of motion pictures. At least this is the impression given by that gangster's biography being a source for multitude of films in the last three quarters of century. One of the less conventional films inspired by facts and myths of Capone is Capone's Lost Treasure, 1994 thriller directed by Robert Hicks.

The protagonists are Joe Forelli (played by Loring Stevenson), Lou Cassado (played by James E. Christopher) and Al Petrucci (played by Victor Arnopolin) - three old men enjoying uneventful but carefree life in the nursing home. That life is endangered by the arrival of Dagmar Speer (played by Robert Maher), sinister-looking European art dealer who wants to extract information about the event that took place more than sixty years ago. Only then Michelle Ciccone (played by Samantha Carpel), young art teacher and trio's best friend, learns about old men's past in Capone's criminal organisation. Sixty years ago Joe, Lou and Al, being small-time gangsters, witnessed an incident in which valuable cargo got lost.

Capone's Lost Treasure was made with low budget and any viewer having low expectations wouldn't be surprised with it. The acting is at times bad and production values almost non-existent. However, there is one refreshing thing about Capone's Lost Treasure - its heroes are old people, category completely ignored by Hollywood these days. Their European adversary is such cartoonish villain that it turns this film into unintentional parody of itself. Finally, it seems that the cast and crew had great deal of fun making this film, and part of that atmosphere is visible on the screen. Although far from being recommendable, Capone's Lost Treasure is far from tragedy for all those who by some chance spend hour and half of their lives watching it.

RATING: 3/10 (+)
