England's Real National Sport Isn't Football—It's Remembering Football
People like to say football is England’s national sport, but, MAYBE this year aside, we've excelled more at remembering the game rather than playing it over the last 60 years.
Every few years, another documentary pops up, another anniversary gets a big TV special, another group of retired footballers gather to tell us why we got knocked out in the quarters, or worse.
I started to wonder: have we actually spent more hours making programs about England’s football history than we’ve spent playing at big tournaments?
And the answer is probably YES!
Since 1966, England has clocked about 165 hours playing in World Cups and Euros. That’s every minute on the pitch, including extra time.
Figuring out how many hours we’ve produced about England’s football story is trickier. Nobody’s keeping tabs on documentaries, specials, DVDs, streaming series, and nostalgia shows. So I threw together a rough estimate—looking at long-form productions and the way TV output’s exploded over the years.
The best guess? By Euro 2024, we hit around 1,000 hours of professional football-history programming. Even if I’m wildly off, it still works out to several hours of throwback content for every hour England’s actually played tournament football.
In other words, we’re better at talking about football than playing it.

This really isn’t a dig at the team—it’s more about today’s media world.
Back in the ‘70s, there were a handful of TV channels and nostalgia only had so much room. Now, everyone needs content around the clock: broadcasters, streaming platforms, publishers, YouTube. If England makes a semi-final, great. If they lose dramatically? Even better. That’s instant documentaries, podcasts, magazine specials, tactical breakdowns, and endless social clips that get recycled for decades.
Turns out, failure’s got serious commercial value.
Football’s practically become its own cinematic universe at this point. Italia ’90 gets revisited every few years. Euro ’96 has gotten almost mythical. Beckham’s red card, Gazza’s tears, Southgate’s missed penalty—these moments come back every summer like we’re rewatching a nostalgic Marvel movie.
And then, of course, 1966.
Somewhere in the BBC, there’s got to be a hard drive labeled “Geoff Hurst - Ultimate Final Version DEFINITELY FINAL v27.” Every anniversary digs up new angles, new eyewitnesses, new experts ready to explain why this retelling is finally the definitive one.
We’ve probably spent more hours collectively analyzing England’s big win than the players spent actually achieving it.
Funny thing is, this isn’t even about football.
Britain’s always loved buffing up its history until it shines brighter than the present. Football’s just the perfect example. One victory’s turned into a whole industry: documentaries, books, podcasts, dramas, museum exhibitions, and anniversary specials that stretch back nearly sixty years.
Maybe England’s greatest sporting achievement wasn’t winning the World Cup. Maybe it’s figuring out how one World Cup win could keep us going with content for generations.
Disclaimer: My estimate—about 1,000 hours of football-history programming—is just a transparent model based on identifiable long-form productions, not a complete archive count. Honestly, the number isn’t the point. What’s funny is that we really are world champions at remembering football.
Great walkthrough of England football through the lens of what's been played and what's been remembered. A World Cup crowing for sure will put its mark in history and have generations after generations talk about and even get energy out of it. And if that happens it means anything is possible.

If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
So I've dealt with people like this before it's nothing new
But what they are doing is bad Very badi joined steemit like everyone else thinking it offers freedom but I must say steemit offered much more freedom than Hive does
