Do You Hear What I Hear?

This post started out as just a simple idea. I wanted to make a meme. But I suck at formatting memes, and I just couldn't quite get it to feel the same in that format as it did in my head. So, instead, I decided to make up a little story to go with my pictures and enter it into @mariannewest's 5 minute freewrite. Today's prompt was "brittle", although I have to admit that I started with the idea for the story and had to work the theme into it (though only barely). But, without further ado, I hope you enjoy this highly fictionalized account of my last mushroom foraging adventure.

I was out for a hike a couple of weeks ago several days after a good rain. The Auricularia were abundant.

I think these have to be my favorite mushrooms. While they are edible, I haven't given them a try, yet. I have some dried in the cabinet, however I haven't gotten around to finding a good recipe for them. From what I've read, they are not especially tasty on their own. They are said to add an interesting crunchy texture to a dish, and they pick up the flavors of what they are cooked in. But, that's not why I enjoy them, anyway. I just can't get over how much they resemble an actual human ear both in shape and in texture!

Anyway, back to the hike. As I was walking along, I began to hear something off in the distance. A sharp and brittle noise that pierced my eardrums like red hot metal. It sounded very familiar, but I was too far away to really be sure what it was.

I continued on.

Soon, I found myself singing as I walked:

Come crawling faster.
Obey Your Master.
Your life burns faster
Obey your MASTER
MASTER
Master of puppets I'm pulling your strings;
Twisting your mind and smashing your dreams.
Blinded by me, you can't see a thing.
Just call my name cuz I'll hear you scream...

That's when it dawned on me. I knew what the sound was! I began to listen again. It was closer now; just around the next bend! I picked up the pace to see who was blasting Metallica in the middle of the woods, and as I turned the corner I saw the man himself...

I stopped dead in my tracks and continued to listen as Kirk Hammett shredded right there in the middle of the forest. I couldn't help but wonder where his amp was plugged in. I began to look around for any kind of available electricity, but my sudden movement must have spooked him. He stopped playing, and his head shot up looking in my direction. I hunkered down behind a giant fallen tree, but it was too late. The guitar legend disappeared into the forest quicker than a blink of the eye.

I sat there for quite a while - half in awe of the moment; half thinking about what I could have done differently so as not to have spooked him. But, the moment was over, so I decided to continue on with my hike.

As I passed through that hallowed spot where Kirk had been bending strings, I noticed something on a log.

I knew that I recognized it somewhere in a back corner of my mind, but I just couldn't quite place what it was. My hike continued, but I couldn't get my mind off of that glob of gunk.

What was it?

I reached into my backpack to grab a bottle of water, but the bag I had been using to collect mushrooms spilled out on the ground. And THAT is when it dawned on me. I knew what the stuff was!

I had just born witness to an EAR MELTING HEAVY METAL GUITAR SOLO!!
