Day 788: 5 Minute Freewrite: Tuesday-Prompt: Fern Seeds

My parents gave me my own area in one of our gardens when I was six years old but I was only allowed to plant three things. I chose carrots, radishes and ferns. Fern seeds were not sold in the store and everyone tried to explain to me that ferns do not grow from seed, but I just couldn't wrap my brain around that concept at that time. So, I assumed that ferns were weeds that just appeared somehow. Where did weeds come from? I didn't know and I didn't care. And guess how I earned my allowance that summer and many summers forward? By pulling weeds out of our many gardens and digging up all of the dandelion weeds by the root, which grew in the lawn. It was an endless job because the weeds kept growing. My desire to plant ferns quickly vanished when I thought ferns were weeds.
