Fungi Friday - Honey Mushrooms and Creatures

Here's a couple honey mushrooms for this #fungifriday by @ewkaw

Here we have some Armillaria mellea aka honey mushrooms. These ones actually glow in the dark and cause the phenomenon called foxfire where lots of them glow in the dark in the forest.

These ones are edible but there are many within the family armillaria that are poisonous even deadly like the galerina autumnalis that looks very similar. The edible ones have a white spore print and also have a ring on the stem near the cap. Also honey mushrooms can cause gas upset if cooked improperly. You need to parboil them a bit first, then finish cooking them later. The texture is nice and firm and they taste really good. I typically stay away from eating these though, as there are too many variables that can go wrong. Then I'll be laying on the bed eating gas x pills if one thing goes wrong lol.

Here's a little critter just starting out. This might be either a tiny comb tooth, or lions mane mushroom. I'm guessing its lions mane. I hope it grows into a nice large specimen. These are an edible mild tasting mushroom very high in protein.

Look at this strange creature. I found this growing on the top of a dead log. This is a bracket fungus that is confused since it doesn't have gravity to pull it down into a normal looking shape.

Here you can see some guttation, this is term used when a mushroom expels excess water in the form of tiny water droplets. If I had to guess I would say this is a Fomes fomentarious, but it could be any number of different types of bracket fungi.

Happy #fungifriday

This is looking like a good year for fall fungi. I'm still hoping for a chicken of the woods find so i can make buffalo wings.

Here's L. sulphureus I found last year:

That's a lot of wings. I guessed over 100 kilos of fruiting bodies, which I had no way to use. My cup runneth over.

Thanks!

Wow did you freeze any. I just found a bunch today as well and plan on freezing it after cooking it.

The rains have just begun here. So I have yet to look much since they began.

I did harvest a few kilos, but ate them fresh, as I had already ~10 kilos of lobsters, and a nearly endless stream of fresh chanterelles.

Yeah its pretty faint to see unless your eyes have fully adjusted to pitch black. Even then they are faint unless lots of them are stacked on eachother.

A little less magical then, but still very cool!

With a long exposure camera shot they look magical. Maybe in the pacific northwest where there are acres of them it would be a sight to see.
