I recently dedicated myself to creating an exclusive list of all the PlayStation 1 games I've played so far and as I said before, it's amazing how many good games the old Sony console has, many of those games have been forgotten over the years even though they may not be wonderful games like the best known, but if they are really good games, in fact many of those games can easily rival the best known titles in the industry, but for some reason or another, they have been overshadowed by these games themselves. While the game I'm going to tell you about below is no wonder, it's a game that could be considered a hidden gem of the old but beloved PlayStation 1.

Today's Retro Review is about: C-12 Final Resistance.

C-12FinalResistanceSTORY.png

C-12 Final Resistance presents us with a totally desolate and destroyed world, countries around the world have succumbed to chaos and death, and the cause of all this is an extraterrestrial race that has come to planet earth to look for a component, Carbon-12. There are few survivors of this serious annihilation, the few humans who have survived hide in small cities and small groups of people, some humans have been abducted by extraterrestrials themselves and were turned into really dangerous cyborgs and meanwhile another group of humans represent resistance, but the technological power of extraterrestrials is very high for simple humans, in short: humanity is completely fucked up, therefore, at this point in the story is when our main protagonist enters: Major Vaughan.

By attacking the extraterrestrial race, humans have managed to steal some components and weapons from them, all in order to be able to face this threat. Major Vaughan is the only volunteer to undergo an operation to implant some of these components of alien origin, thus creating a cyborg, but is on the side of human resistance, therefore, makes it the only hope of salvation of the human race.

C-12 Final Resistance has a plot typical of the time and above all a plot typical of the films of the 80's and 90's, but despite that, it is still an entertaining game, from which we will get several hours of fun.

C-12FinalResistanceGRAPHICS.png

I honestly didn't remember that visually this game looked so good, graphically it's one of the best you can find in the great catalog of video games that boasts the old but beloved PlayStation 1.

Visually (and also mechanically) it reminds me a lot of Syphon Filter, another excellent PlayStation 1 game, because you could say that the color palette used in the creation of C-12 Final Resistance has certain nuances that makes it resemble Syphon Filter or at least I think so.

Similarly, C-12 Final Resistance has a great graphic level, both in characters and scenarios. Let's remember that in this game we are in a totally destroyed and desolate world, so throughout the game we are going to witness this kind of atmosphere and no doubt, this is a very well done aspect in this game, because you really feel the destruction and loneliness in each of the scenarios where it is present.

The modeling of human characters is the right one and it's quite good, although it doesn't reach the level of Metal Gear Solid, for example, but if it's good enough to make you feel that the characters fit with the scenarios and in the same way, it fits with the plot of the game itself.

C-12FinalResistanceSOUND.png

Bearing in mind that C-12 Final Resistance is a pure action game, the sound aspect that will stand out most in this title are its sound effects, such as shots and explosions, but also the environmental sounds that in a certain way accompany, help to decorate and create an atmosphere of immersion in this chaotic world, a sound aspect very well worked and elaborated in this videogame. However, although in many occasions the sound effects obscure the melodies offered by this title, I have to say that musically C-12 Final Resistance is not bad at all, because if we pay attention or turn down the volume of the sound effects or simply listen to the soundtrack of this video game separately, we can find a few quite good melodies and according to the game.

C-12FinalResistanceGAMEPLAY.png

C-12 Final Resistance is a third-person 3D action game, as I said earlier, we find ourselves on a planet earth succumbed to the destruction product of an alien race they saw in search of carbon. C-12 Final Resistance has certain similarities with Syphon Filter, not only graphically, as I have already mentioned, but also mechanically present certain similarities, although I must say that as for this aspect Syphon Filter is better done.

While we advance in the game we will be able to use a moderate list of weapons, that will help us to complete the missions that this game offers to us, to the being a game of action, we will be in constant movement to avoid the attacks of our enemies or to attack in strategic places in such a way that it gives us certain advantage before the enemy in question.

The difficulty level of C-12 Final Resistance is appropriate for games of this genre, we will have a bar of life that will only be recharged with the use of items that are left by our enemies or find them scattered on the stage, in the same way happens with ammunition. C-12 Final Resistance also has a save system that are found in certain places of the scenarios, so, not having "continuations" we must give the proper use to these save places so that we do not lose any significant progress if we came to die, in short "always save the game or fuck you".

This basically consists of completing the missions that the resistance leaders are telling us, which in essence are: "walk and eliminate all aliens you see," because that's what we're going to do for most of the game, go through each scenario by handing out swords and shots without a break. But it wasn't all about handing out shots relentlessly, as there will be times when we will have to use our best stealth skills, as there will often be several enemies in the scenarios, so it was better to attack them using stealth, as this would give us an advantage over a group of enemies. We will also find some puzzles that we will have to solve to obtain some item or to be able to complete some scenario, but these puzzles in question were not so difficult.

A negative point that I must mention is the camera system, because it is horrible and often frustrates due to the malfunctioning of this aspect that often cause our death and therefore our fury.

C-12 Final Resistance is one of those gems of the video game that you ask yourself "Why isn't it more popular", maybe it was a game overshadowed by other titles, but I think what made C-12 Final Resistance not more popular with fans was its year of release, 2001, when the PlayStation 2 already existed and brought with it a lot of excellent games, which improved in many ways what C-12 Final Resistance offered, which made this game go a little unnoticed, even though it was a very good game. When C-12 Final Resistance was published in the last years of the old but beloved PlayStation 1, it buried what this title wanted to offer, however, at least in my opinion, is a good and entertaining action game.

The first game that comes to mind when I think back to my PlayStation 1 is Gran Torismo . I spent so many hours unlocking all the licences and collecting as many cars as I could.

It’s funny how some games are a hit and then others that are just as good or sometimes better , slip by unnoticed.

You did a great job on your review of C-12 Final Resistance! It was very detailed and if I still had my PlayStation 1 it would be a title I keep an eye out for.

Thanks for sharing ,
Have an awesome day!
