Spring Garden Work, pulling corn stalks and other stuff

avatar

Hello, and welcome to my blog!

We haven't had very many nice days lately, but I've been trying to work on the garden a bit at a time when we get a nice day.

I started pulling out the remains of the corn stalks in the garden several days ago when we had a decent day. The east end of the garden still had several rows of cut off corn stalks that I didn't get to last fall. As you can see, the snow was almost gone at the beginning of the week. You can see the pile of corn roots in front of the white bucket, I had pulled those out before I took the picture. I'm easily distracted from tedious work, so I didn't get them all pulled out at that time.

Today was another nice day, so I was able to get the rest of the corn stubble out of the garden. The boards on the ground are where the garden edge will be this year. We shortened it a bit because the plum tree shades that part of the garden now that it's gotten bigger. I pulled the rest of the corn stubble on the other side of the boards after I took the picture.

Another garden project that I've been working on is changing the west end of the garden a bit. We decided to change it because there wasn't enough space between the edge of the garden and the fence. You can see how the garden edge was from last year. The space between the garden edge and the fence is pretty narrow, too narrow to turn the tiller around when you get to the edge of the garden while tilling. As you can see, I had already started when I remembered to take a picture.

I pulled out the boards that were holding the garden edge. I'm going to put boards in to make the edge of the garden straight with where the edge is by the water tank stand. I put in a row of used edger blocks that I had scrounged up last year, I needed something to hold in the cypress mulch that covers the ground around the water tank stand.

I still have to pull all the corn stubble out of the side garden.

I'm going to have to wait for the next bit of good weather to get started on the side garden. Starting tomorrow, we're supposed to be getting a couple of days of rain or snow, possibly both, and a cold spell. It's a good excuse to put off pulling corn stubble, that's kind of hard on my old back. It's going to be another month before I can start planting anything anyway, so I'm in no hurry to get it done.

That's all I have for this post, thanks for stopping by to check it out!

Excellent gardening.

I have been growing potatoes and fruit in the desert recently, and appreciate this kind of thing.

I was wondering how your back liked that work.... :))

I hope to get to the garden for a short while once it warms up here and do some more digging. A short spell of warm then the rain returns tomorrow.

Feels good to get it all started eh Amber? Good job repurposing to create new edger blocks. Take a few days off (blame the snow and rain) haha, I always think of this quote when planning/procrastinating my gardening: In nature nothing is hurried, yet everything is accomplished.

You got this!
