Fresh Coconut Milk for #MarketFriday

avatar

In an earlier conversation with @dswigle a couple of days ago, I promised to submit an entry with regards coconut milk. Fortunately, I still have pictures of the last time I went to the market before this lockdown thing. So, this will be my entry to this week's #MarketFriday.

We went to the market to buy coconut milk. Here in this part of the earth where there are more coconuts than humans, we can get freshly squeezed coconut milk in the market.

We use coconut milk often and liberally in most of our dishes. Hence, there is a section of the market where the only thing you can buy are mature coconuts and coconut milk.

Coconut milk is derived from the grated pulp of mature coconuts. Due to its high oil content, it has a rich and creamy taste, and thus is an excellent ingredient to a creamy dish!

This guy in the electric grater is grating the coconut. I believe that using this electric grater needs some skills. One needs extra caution in using this tool. (However, I am so thankful with this technological advancement, as I remember grating the mature coconuts manually back in my younger years. It was, oh, so tiresome!) All the grated coconut will then be put in a net bag then to the squeezing machine to derive the coconut milk. I don't know why I don't have a picture of it, but sadly, I don't. 😢 It is just a simple machine. It is more of a metal plate pushed by a jack, pressing the net bag full of grated coconut, with a catcher to gather the coconut milk. (I hope you get a mental picture of it. 😬)

We can either buy a pure coconut milk (directly pressed grated coconut), or diluted coconut milk (grated coconut pulp pressed with coconut water). We usually use the diluted coconut milk at the initial stage of cooking, and the pure one in the final stage.

We buy per container--small, medium, large. I think the one in the picture is the medium one, which cost P30 ($0.60).

We bought coconut milk then to cook for a native delicacy we call dagmay--taro leaves in coconut milk.

zmwz3a.jpg

These are the dried taro leaves. Taro leaves and coconut milk are cooked together for over an hour in low fire. It is best with chilli.

This is the finished product. I don't know if the picture shows how yummy it is, but rest assured that it is! 😋😋

Now, with the lockdown thingy, we buy 3 to 5 cups of coconut milk at a time, then we stock it in the freezer for future use. We make sure we always have coconut milk, because some soups and stews are just incomplete without it.

For those who doesn't get the luxury of fresh coconut milk, you need not feel envious, you still can make a fresh coconut milk at home, by combining unsweetened shredded coconut with warm water in a blender, puree the mixture and then strain it with a cheesecloth. Simple? Try it! 😉

And this is it. This is my simple #MarketFriday submission by the most kind-hearted host, @dswigle. ❤❤❤

Thank you for reading,

Ging

Yummy!!! You were amazing! I had no idea of the differences in the coconuts until we talked about it. This makes it very clear that I was clueless! LOL

I can buy coconut milk, but, it is not fresh, it is in a can. I haven't tried at the natural store, so I may do that. I imagine that the coconut milk would give dishes a very nice taste. I cannot thank you enough for presenting this in such a way that is easy to understand and make it so that I can even try it at home!

Thank you! You are the best! I loved this post!

Wow! You've written a loooong reply, like a novel! Hahaha! 😂

That's totally fine, as there are lots and lots of things or food in your place that I heard nothing about. This is what #MarketFriday is all about, right? 😉 We learn from each other, though I'm learning a lot more (because I'm more ignorant?!? 😅😬).

Canned coconut milk? See, I don't know that there exist something like that! That's interesting. We do not have canned coconut milk here. Hahaha! 😂 I don't know which is better, but I suggest you try the one that you can make at home. I think it has less chemicals than canned. 🙄

Thank you for not hesitating to express your appeciation about this post. I am reluctant of how simple I presented my #MarketFriday post, seeing that others have lengthy entries. So, an appreciation coming from you means so much, Denise. Thank you @dswigle. ❤❤❤

Love to you. 😘 Take care.

You are not ignorant. OMG!

Canned coconut milk is here because we don't have the ready supply to make out own, but, I don't use it because it is canned and not fresh! :) I am going to try your method and see if it works for me! Thank you again. I love the way you present your posts.

They are always a true delight. Love to you!! Have a great night!

Wow! That's cool to see. Amazing how inexpensive the coconut milk is there compared to here, but it has to travel a looooooong way to get to where I am, lol. Almost always the coconut is packaged somehow here. If you see whole coconuts in the produce section, usually they are wrapped in plastic, which confuses me because IT ALREADY HAS ITS OWN PERFECT PROTECTIVE SHELL? lol Stores are weird how they package everything here...

I cannot imagine the packaging they do with the coconuts! Hahaha! 😂 Are you referring to the young, green coconuts? Maybe they want it scratch free?!? 😂😂😂

Thank you for taking the time to read this simple blog @phoenixwren, and for leaving such kind words. I truly appreciate it! ❤

Nope, they're big and brown. American stores just like to wrap things in plastic for no reason. XD It's so bad for the environment but also just so ridiculous.

Really? I always thought that Americans are environmentalist! 😬😊

Individual people are, a lot of us, anyway. But companies have to be dragged kicking and screaming to do one tiny thing better. We the environmentalist individuals have to always fight companies about it, and more often than not they ignore us, or pretend to do better when they aren't, or do one tiny thing and expect that to be the end of what anyone could want. It's super frustrating!

I can understand. That could really be frustrating, but as long as you're doing something for it, it can be a good start!

Today, while I was walking, I noticed that our neighbors have planted their own vegetables too. We have been gardening for over two years now and reaping the fruits of our labor, and we somehow believe that we have influenced our neighbor in one way or another. 😉 So, please continue the good thing you, you'll never know who will be moved by your actions! 😍❤😍

Thank you for taking the time to answer my thoughts. 😍
