Woolly Bear
Seeing a Wooly Bear caterpillar is another sure sign Autumn has truly arrived.
π
The cooler temperatures now have the Woolly Bears looking and searching for a safe place to hibernate for the Winter.
A few examples of places
they like to dwell is under old tree logs, stones and leaf piles.
Woolly Bear caterpillars will spin a cocoon and evolve into the Isabella tiger moth in the Spring.
(Pyrrharctia Isabella)
According to folklore the
Woolly Bears can predict upcoming Winter.
If the middle brown- redish band is wide then it will be a mild winter. The blacker the band the more severe the will be.
I always check the bands when I see them and I honestly say they don't all agree on the forecast.
I was totally fascinated by the little Wooly Bears when I was a child and still truly am and will always be.

Really cool blog! I remember seeing these on the farm growing up. But, we didn't have such stories about the Caterpillar. I like their name 'wooly bear' that's really sweet. :)
Nice photos. Interesting info about predicting the severity of winter as far as the Wooly bears stripe. We watch how many acorns are dropped then collected by the squirrels. Who knows? Fun to talk about.

Thank You..!!
@farm-mom
The squirrels are really collecting and hoarding the acorns here..!!
I much enjoy Folklore. Nature is amazing. Animals and insects are very smart and intuitive..β€π
