I found a bug

Red beetle no id .jpg

And I can't figure out what it is. Google is not helping me today and showing every possible red beetle there is, but none look like this one.

Found it in a bright location with tall pines and some lower shrubs few weeks ago. It is about 1 cm in length with black head and thorax and orange-red outer wings.
Notice the spots and dimples.

Ugly, nasty thing nice bug :)

Also, does any of you know a good site that helps with insect identification? Would be cool if it was showing some suggestions after uploading a photo.

Seems to be some kind of Ampedus, eg.: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ampedus_pomonae
Couldn't say which species, though. If you really want to find out, you might have some work cut out for you: http://insecta.pro/taxonomy/1001446
On the right is a list with Ampedus species. Most seem to look very similar.

Anyway, I noticed that Google's image search has worsened significantly over recent months. By now, it's probably better to use Bing.

This beetle (especially in the first photo) looks very clean and shiny.
Did you bathe him before the photo shoot? 😂

It has a click beetle shape to it. If you catch it it will click like a spring and go bouncing off somewhere. Somewhat startling to would be predators. My guess would be blood red click beetle Ampedus sanguineus

Haha me and beetles are not buddies. I will not even get close enough to catch it :D
But it does looks like Ampedus sanguineus. Thank you!

That red click beetle would make some amazing looking jewelry, encase it in some kind of epoxy as a pendant. I see stuff like that for sale on etsy all the time.
