Mi encuentro con una libélula 📸 / My encounter with a dragonfly 📸

Muchas personas salen a buscar insectos para fotografiarlos, yo no, los insectos suelen aparecer frente a mí cuando menos me lo espero y en los lugares menos pensados. A veces cargo mi teléfono para retratarlos y otras no. Un día iba bajando las escaleras de mi edificio y en uno de los pasillos que tienen ventanales entre los pisos 3 y 4 vi una libélula en el piso. Seguramente entró por las ventanas y no pudo salir.

Many people go out looking for insects to photograph them, not me, insects usually appear in front of me when I least expect it and in the least expected places. Sometimes I carry my cell phone with me to photograph them and other times don't. One day I was going down the stairs of my building and in one of the corridors that have windows between floors 3 and 4 I saw a dragonfly on the floor. He probably entered through the windows and couldn't get out.

Bajé a hacer lo que iba a hacer y cuando subí la libélula aún estaba allí así que como no cargaba mi teléfono fuí a buscarlo a mi apartamento. Tomé la libélula con cuidado por el cuerpo, la puse sobre mi celular y me dirigí a la terraza del edificio para poder ver a este fascinante insecto de cerca.

I went downstairs to do what I was going to do and when I went upstairs the dragonfly was still there so since I didn't have my cell phone with me I went to my apartment to look for it. I took the dragonfly carefully by his body, put it on my cell phone and went to the terrace of the building to see this fascinating insect up close.

Era una mañana muy soleada, puse a la libélula en el piso para ver cómo reaccionaba, al principio parecía como si estuviera mareada pero poco a poco empezó a moverse. Nunca había agarrado una libélula así que este iba a ser un encuentro muy interesante para mí porque tendría la oportunidad de observarla con calma, en persona y también hacerle fotos.

It was a very sunny morning, I put the dragonfly on the floor to see how he reacted, at first it seemed as if he was dizzy but little by little he began to move. I had never caught a dragonfly before so this was going to be a very interesting encounter for me because I would have the opportunity to calmly observe him in person and also take pictures of him.

Según lo que leí las hembras suelen ser de color marrón mientras que los machos son más coloridos así que creo que esta era un macho / According to what I read females are usually brown while males are more colorful so I think this was a male

Las libélulas son Odonatos (insectos que tienen dientes) pertenecientes al suborden de los Anisópteros y también forman parte de los Paleópteros, es decir, de aquellos insectos que no pueden plegar sus alas hacia arriba sobre sus espaldas. La palabra "libélula" viene del latín libellula que significa balanza y se les puso este nombre por el parecido con una antigua balanza de finos brazos que se sostenía sobre un eje fino.

Dragonflies are Odonata (insects that have teeth) belonging to the Anisoptera suborder and are also part of the Paleoptera, that is, those insects that can't fold their wings up on their backs. The word "dragonfly" comes from the Latin libellula which means scale and they were given this name because of the resemblance to an ancient scale with thin arms that was supported on a thin axis.

Busqué en internet para saber de qué especie es exactamente esta libélula y la que encontré más parecida es la Gynacantha nervosa, una especie muy común en todo el continente americano. Cuando puse esta libélula en el piso me fijé que no caminaba así que la tomé y la puse sobre una de las plantas que está en la terraza. Investigando un poco leí que las libélulas no pueden caminar ya que sus patas delanteras están dispuestas y diseñadas exclusivamente en forma de arco o canasta para que puedan atrapar a sus presas y agarrarse de plantas, árboles,etc.

I searched the Internet to find out exactly what species this dragonfly is and the one I found most similar to is Gynacantha nervosa, a very common species throughout the American continent. When I put this dragonfly on the floor I noticed that he couldn't walk so I took him and put him on one of the plants that is on the terrace. Doing some research I read that dragonflies can't walk since their front legs are arranged and designed exclusively in the shape of an arch or basket so that they can catch their prey and grab onto plants, trees, etc.

Es importante aclarar que a pesar de que la mayoría de la gente los llama Caballitos del diablo, no son lo mismo. Ambos son Odonatos, sin embargo, los Caballitos del diablo son Odonatos del suborden de los Zygóptera (grupo de insectos que pueden plegar sus alas hacia arriba de sus espaldas), a diferencia de las libélulas que son del suborden de los Paleópteros y no pueden hacerlo.

It's important to clarify that although most people call them Damselflies, they aren't the same thing. Both are Odonatos, however, Damselflies are Odonatos from the Zygóptera suborder (a group of insects that can fold their wings up their backs), unlike dragonflies which are from the Paleoptera suborder and cannot do that.

Las libélulas tienen uno de los vuelos más extraordinarios del reino animal, sus alas, de apariencia frágil, tienen la habilidad de moverse de manera independiente, permitiéndoles volar hacia todas las direcciones, incluso hacia atrás y a los lados e inclusive pueden flotar sobre un solo lugar durante algunos minutos. ¿Que los drones y helicópteros les parecen unos inventos increíbles? Estuve unos diez minutos observando y fotografiando a esta libélula y en todo ese tiempo se mostró tranquila. Sus ojos en forma de casco me parecieron impresionantes y me puse a pensar en cómo me vería yo a través de estos casi 30.000 micro lentes, qué imágen tendría esta libélula de mí. Tienen uno de los ojos más asombrosos de la naturaleza y una vista que puede detectar a su presa desde distancias de hasta 12 metros.

I spent about ten minutes observing and photographing this dragonfly and in all that time he was calm. His helmet-shaped eyes seemed impressive to me and I began to think about how I would see myself through these almost 30,000 micro lenses, what image this dragonfly would have of me. They have one of the most amazing eyes in nature and a sight that can detect its prey from distances of up to 12 meters.

Me encantaría tener unos mega lentes de ojos de libélula para poder ver el mundo como lo ven ellas, esa de seguro sería una experiencia muy psicodélica 🤩 jajaja / I would love to have some mega dragonfly eye glasses to be able to see the world as they see it, that would surely be a very psychedelic experience🤩 hahaha

Muchas personas les tienen miedo a las libélulas porque piensan que pican, es totalmente falso. Son insectos muy útiles para el ser humano ya que ayudan a controlar las plagas, una sola libélula puede comer entre 30 y 100 zancudos al día así que debemos protegerlas.
