Hello, insect-loving community! Pictured here is a female peach tree borer moth resting on a leaf of catnip. Our peach tree is just beside it, though it is already dead. These moths laid eggs at the base of the tree in years past which hatched into larvae that bored into the lower trunk and roots of the tree. When they emerge as adults, you can see their empty cocoons scattered around the tree.
If you have young drupe (peach, apricot, plum, etc) trees, watch out for these. They can cause a great decrease in fruit production and eventually kill the tree. I heard that planting alliums such as onion or garlic around the tree will deter them but I don't know if it works. If you do try this method, plant your alliums densely. I must not have planted enough or maybe did so too late.
That's all for now.
Keep your trees healthy!
Happy insect hunting!
